A few years back Ramekon O’Arwisters ( @ramekon ) was the artist in Residence at the elementary school I teach at. When Ramakan first stood in front of the students on his first day he stood quietly in front of the kids and there was this long pause as he held his knitting needle in one hand and a piece of fabric in his other. He said, I'm not going to tell you, I'm going to show you. Watch me." I have never heard such silence and felt such focus with my students. He did the same thing over and over again and the kids had it. Ramekins gift is not just as an artist but as a person who brings people together with a practice of social art work. His work as an artist is astounding, his work as a human is exemplary. I.O.T - first thoughts...

After all this reading and watching I have gathered a few thoughts on the internet of things....

The simplest way to make a dumb device smart is going to be the best for humans.  I was really inspired in the nyt video with the umbrella connected to the internet to tell you if its going to rain. This means you never have to open the weather app again, except when your curious.  Simple and greatly effective. 

Moving seamlessly through all these products that are connected is paramount. With over billions of products expected to be connected in coming years there is going to be many goods for a consumer to wade through. The simplest ones that allow for the user to not bogged down in the mass of it all will succeed.  

The need for standardization and collaboration  from companies and between companies respectively. The need for these two things goes beyond net neutrality and into a pragmatic shift  who is competition and how can we work together to make a better product for the customer. 

Should designers be targeting interventions on existing cities or planing for the new cities of tomorrow?

 Can Smart healthcare be available to everyone or only ones with the money? Around 40 million Americans are still uninsured. What level of smart healthcare will be available to them?
