Mikhail Karikis - Children of Unquiet (2013)
"Mikhail Karikis (Greece/UK) has produced a new work Children of Unquiet in which redundant industrial infrastructure is re-imagined to become a site of possibility. The third in a triptych of works that explore histories of labour, the artist has collaborated closely with a community of children from the area known as Devil's Valley in Tuscany.
Recent technological automation devastated the surrounding village communities that once housed over 5000 workers for the world's first and one of the largest geothermal factories. A unique environment, inspiring the medieval writer Dante in his depiction of hell in Inferno, steaming pools (boric acid fumaroles) and bubbling mud provide an extraordinary visual and sonic landscape.
Making what the artist describes as a 'take over', children aged between 5 and 12 occupy the deserted natural residential and industrial sites by playing in the scorching vapourous wasteland. They read philosophical texts about love and bio-politics among the dilapidated modernist villages and sing the roaring geothermal sounds of guessers." Site gallery, Sheffield (2013).
