"Untitled" ca. late 1937-39 colored pencils on paper by Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) at @metmuseum the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Written near the drawing: In sketches from the late 1930s, Pollock explored old master compositions with methods learned from his teacher at the Art Student League, Thomas Hart Benton. From 1926 to 1927, Benton published a five-article series, "Mechanics of Form Organization in Painting," that demonstrated an analysis of paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, El Greco, and others in terms of their "cubic forms." Pollock's brother, Charles, also a student of Benton, owned copies of these articles. Here, Pollock has sketched from Ruben's "Bath of Diana (1635-40) and reduced its composition to rhythmic linear movements and masses of dark and light. #pollock #jacksonpollock #jacksonpollockweek #drawing #themetropolitanmuseumofart #themet #artstudentleague #peterpaulrubens #untitled (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York)
