FROM DEPENDENCY TO DIGNITY ART FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE:
A Cultural night to celebrate the ‘Arunthathiyar spirit, an attempt to strengthen the Arunthathiyar art forms transformation from caste practices to weapons against caste oppression.
The parai originally called as thappu is undeniably a symbol of Dalit assertion today. But unlike pallars and prayers who have asserted themselves to some extent remain the Arunthathiyars the Dalits amongst the Dalits of Tamilnadu.
WHY WE NEED A CULTURAL NIGHT FOR ARUNTHATHIYARS:
§ To protect the traditional arts.
§ Arunthathiyars have a special cultural heritage owing to their language and occupation and we need to appreciate and protect it artist.
§ To inform our Unity and strength to Govt and Dominating Hindu caste.
§ To provide a platform to express the creative talents to arunthathiyar artist.
§ To create an awareness and value at out the traditional arts and music to the future generation.
§ To integrate Arunthathiyars from different places and create solidarity and empowerment. –
1.WHO ARE ARUNTHATHIYARS:
Tamilnadu is also one of the State which has a high population of the
Arunthatiyar community pallar, parayar and Arunthatiyar are the three major dalit groups in the State ofTamilnaduamoung them, Arunthathiyars are considered to be the lowest in the dalit hierarchy, the ‘Dalit among Dailts’. The untouchables. It is one of the most oppressed, depressed and the poorest among the poor in. the Indian society, There are about 60,00,000 Arunthathiyars in Tamilnadu. They are also identified with different names such as sakkilar, mathari, thoti, pagadai in tamilnadu. Artinthatiyars are more vulnerable to be forced to perform all undignified tasks (manual, scavenging, death messages for upper caste community, dead body burials, dead cattle removal, drum beating in upper caste death funerals etc.) in the society. Poor living conditions desperate search for a dignified livelihood and decent wages constant exploitation and harassment from moneylenders and upper caste landlords are part of the day to day life of an Arunthatiyar.
2.BACKGROUND OF ARUNTHATIYAR.
§ This exclusion takes a socio-economic dimension since Arunthathiyar do not have access to the means of production and are economically, dependent on dominant caste. Their caste can be defined as a endogamous group , having a traditional association with an occupation.
§ Unlike the other Dalit groups (Pallar and Paraiyar), still the Arunthathiyar are not aware of their Rights but instead only self complacent with the various incentives and the attractive schemes of the Government. This community is branded as passive. a The reservation quota of the Government has been even grabbed only to those other Dalit groups, leavings behind the Arunthathiyars, who are also entitled to gain such privileges.
§ Dr. Ambedkar, the Veteran Father of law is still a nonentity for the Arunthathiyars due to their ignorance.
§ The Arunthathiyars are also becoming victimized to the New Economic policy by becoming poorer and to poorest. –
§ Owing to illiteracy Child-labour Child abuse bonded labour and rag picking are the regular phenomena among the Arunthathiyar. The Arunthathiyars women folk suffer a lot, out of sexual harassments by the caste people which they can’t even express out verbally
3.KEY CHALLENGES FACED BY THIS COMMUNITY
3-1SOCIAL STATUS
They are socially discriminated. There are 72 types of social discriminations which include denial of entry into temples, denial of right to occupy space in bus-stops, denial of right to have footwear and enter the streets of caste Hindus, separate cremation ground and two- tumbler system in tea shops. Thus, they have been kept in the lowest rung of the social ladder.
3.2ECONOMICAL STATUS:
They are economically discriminated. This sort of discrimination includes allotment of unhygienic and insecure street corners for leather works related to footwear, disrespectful sanitary works in public and private places, manual scavenging, cleaning septic tanks, bonded labour system and landlessness. For centuries, the people have been experiencing such kinds of discrimination imposed upon them by dominant castes and government machineries. As a result, they are the victims of acute poverty.
3.3 EDUCATIONAL STATUS :
They are deprived of education due to various factors. As 99% of the parents are involved in sanitary works in towns and agricultural woks in villages, they have to leave their home in the early morning. Some of the. parents are migrants and are out of their native places more than six months a year for better work and salary. in this context, there is no opportunity for them to prepare and motivate their children for school education and cultivate the culture of academic education. Even if some children are managed to enter school, they have to experience discrimination in school premises too.
3.4 POLITICAL STATUS:
They are politically discriminated. The Tamil Nadu government has allotted 18 % of reservation to Scheduled Castes which includes 73 castes. Of this 73, Pallar, Paralyar, and Arunthathiyar constitute majority and unfortunately the reservation quota has been monopolized by the former two castes. Thus, Arunthathiyar, who actually constitute 6% of the population, were denied the right to their share of reservation. Following constant struggles, agitations, and demands by the movements of Arunthathiyars, supportive organizations and like-minded political parties, now they have achieved 3% of separate quota within 18 % of reservation. However, the present quota remains incomplete until they achieve their due share of 6% and these reservation quotas are duly filled in various sectors like education, employment, government and administration.
4. ARUNTHATHIYAR HUMAN RIGHTS FORUM (AHRF)

5.EXPECTED PARTICIPATION :
We are expecting participant in this cultural night programe overall in Tamilnadu nearly 5000 to 7000 peoples are participate. 6.CHANGES AFTER THIS EVENT:
1. Other Dalit organizations in Tamilnadu and Arunthathiyar community will recognized AHRF as a front runner organization fighting for their rights.
2. Arunthathiyar community and other Dalit organizations may seek AHRF assistance and support on certain issues.
3. It is an expectation more and more village level AHRF will be established spontaneously.
4. Arunthathiyar may come in the request to establish AHRF at village level.
5. Other dalit Organizations ill realize that they cannot afford to be indifferent to AHRF have realized their disregard role in Arunthathiyar Liberation
ARUNTHATHIYAR CULTURAL NIGHT — OBJECTIVES
1.Th create awareness of the Arunthathiyar art forms and their vibrant culture amongst public.
Traditionally art was considered the domain of the so called upper castes i Tamilnadu. In the recent years, The Dalit rights movement has asserted that the Dalits have a rich artistic and musical tradition The Dalit forms some of which are rules tradition. The Dalit art forms same of which are ritual related have for ages considered untouchables. too.... Despite the awareness created on Dalit art forms, awareness about Arunthathiyar art forms is scanty. There are other initiatives like this organized across the State, very few Arunthathiyars get chance to perform and talk. This cultural night is a follow up action to strengthen and sustain their hope on their talents and excellence.
2. To use art as a political weapon in the ongoing struggle for Arunthathiyar liberation
ART is a very crucial record of transformations within and of society, some of the most popular art forms have come from the oppressed sections of the society and some of the most revolutionary movements working for liberation of the oppressed people have used music as a powerful weapon of change. In southernIndia where attempts are being made to rewrite caste equations and to question existing notions on culture and language, understanding the Arunthathiyar art forms with a clear perspective about their historical position as agents of change and an undeniable requisite of the Arunthathiyar struggle for liberation is a culturally and democratically necessary action.
