this seems so interesting! I’m not trying to be an idiot, but what exactly do diplomats do? would you mind explaining it to me if you have the time? :)

Well, it's pretty complicated. So... bear with me. I remember when I was a child and tried to explain what my dad does to my classmates! Basically, a diplomat is someone who is appointed by the government of their country, usually the foreign office (and as such, work directly for the country in question/the foreign minister) to negotiate with the government of other countries. It's all about the politics, economy, and social situation in a country. Someone like the Ambassador is the head of the embassy and directly representative of the state. They usually have to use a lot of tact in order to deal with political/economic climates that may be volatile in some countries.

A diplomat has nothing to do with warfare. That's not their turf. It's all about bettering the relationship between one country and another. The embassy is also responsible for all tourists from their home country. In case someone loses their passport on a holiday, or gets into trouble with the government in the country they're visiting. The embassy can also work as asylum, since the embassy, as well as the diplomatic residence, has diplomatic immunity. Sometimes embassies and diplomats are caught in the crossfire, particularly in politically unstable countries, and since they're representative of their country sometimes people's anger is directed at diplomats. I don't know if you recall the attack on the American embassy in Benghazi, where the U.S. Ambassador was killed. But that would be an example of that.
