congrats! it’s always nice to see when hard work pays off!

yeah less hard work more talent, tbh :P  although i did work hard on that essay.  and i'm working hard on my dissertation.  still, i feel like i know more about Greenland and the Pacific Isles than i do about philosophy right now...

yay! and hey, even if they don’t care how good you are at philosophy, they care about how hardworking you are, and that’s a good illustration of that quality :D

that’s not really shallow though. i’d call it a difference in ambition, but even using that term is a bit incorrect.

i mean because instead of me pursuing my career for others, or for some higher purpose, i'd be pursuing it for me alone

hence my use of the word shallow.  it doesn't apply for everyone, but it does for me, because i've spent my whole life thinking i would use my life to help others and... my priorities have shifted.

but yes not for everyone because it's so ok to pursue the career you want for yourself

i'm just coming around to the idea, i guess

oh my goooooossssssssh yes that was perfect casting.  i think he really made Javert's sympathetic aspects clear.

it helps that i really dislike Valjean.  i think that every good deed he does is just so conveniently self serving and he comes off as... so self righteous when he's just egotistical.  oh and that one time when i'm like wow ok you're only acting for the good of someone else is when he rescues Javert, but i just read the book plot synopsis and it turns out he was kinda repaying a debt (cos Javert saved Valjean's life one time while not realising it was Valjean) and idk, that kinda takes away some of the shine from that one awesome selfless act.

i actually enjoyed the book. yeah, the idea is overdone, but so are a lot of ideas. i thought she actually did a good job of addressing issues such as imperialism and self. and the romantic subplot didn’t subtract for me. *shrugs*

oh really?  you have good taste so that gives me hope.  but there's still no way i'm reading the book - if i have to struggle through Meyer's talent-bereft, clunky and convoluted writing again i will stab myself in the eye.

it's a subplot?  i got the impression it was very much a major plotline...
