Raising a queer kid pt2: after "being out" comes dealing with bullying

At the dinner table

Child: You gay loser

Me: Whut?

Child: The gays are losers

Me: Who says that?

Child: X (name of the little friend where all the 'stuff' comes from)

Me: Do you know what gay means? Does X know what gay means?

Child: ... No

Me:... (stern face)

Child: but actually I don't know what loser means either (Note: in our language we don't translate "loser")

Me: A 'loser' (in English) is a loser (in Dutch) - that's simple

Child: and what is gay?

Me: remember when we saw the people with all the rainbows on tv? the ones who had the party because they could be free now? a lot of those people are gay - they are boys who fall in love with boys

Child: and what's it called when girls fall in love with girls

Me: Lesbian

Child: and when you like both, you know, like...

Me: Like me?

Child: yes like you

Me: Bi, if you like both that's called bi

Child: okay but then i have to tell X what it means because I am a little bit gay, cause I am in love with Y (random boy). And that's okay, right mom? So he shouldn't say that gays are losers. I think he doesn't know what it is.

Me: yes being gay and being in love with someone who's the same as you is definitely okay. I think you're right and he doesn't know, his mom and dad would have told him not to use that as an insult

Child: no, cause maybe his mom and dad are bi right?

Me: *jawdrop*
