as the genocide in Gaza continues to claim the lives of innocent people every day, the writer Alaa Alqaisi describes the slow claiming of a soul, of a country, a culture, a people. in this time of unprecedented inhumanity from world leaders and local politicians alike, the least you can offer yourself is to not turn a blind eye to the atrocities, to not ignore the plight in the hopes someone else will see to it. reading this essay will never encapsulate the suffering of starvation with a world ignoring your situation, but it can begin to help us understand the horror of indifference, and how to conceptualise the slow disintegration of a country under the gaze of a genocidal fascist regime.

you notice over time that some people clearly understand the concept of thinking critically about the media they consume and who its created by but dont want to do the critical thinking themselves so they just like. wait for people on the internet to tell them what theyre allowed to like in order to keep their Good Person score high or whatever. which doesnt seem very productive to me i think.

once in grade 6 I saw a 'pottery making club' in a ditch on the schoolyard- I assume at some point someone realized there was actually good quality clay in the ditch and when I walked up there were about a dozen 12 year olds sitting around the few girls who had brought their water bottles out to mix the clay, and a designated spot to put the finished bowls and tablets, and people going off and collecting sticks to make designs with and i really think that's the natural state of the human race

In elementary school I learned that you can make paint out of certain sedimentary rocks on the playground if you crushed them and mixed with water and at one point I had up to 25 kindergarten through third graders making cave paintings on the underside of the slides
