A boilerplate Apollo Command/Service module is mated to its Saturn I booster as part of the SA-6 mission. More commonly referred to as AS-101, the flight marked the first time an Apollo spacecraft was carried into Earth orbit.
Lasting just under six hours, launch occurred on May 28, 1964, from Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Apollo capsule on AS-101 was BP-13, weighing 17,000 pounds and carrying more than 116 sensors. It did not have a heat shield and therefore was not recovered after the flight.
AS-101 is seen below poised at LC-37B.
