I really don't get the 'rightful king/queen' arguments for Jon or Daenerys. They are only 'rightful' if you still hold that the Targaryen's SHOULD still have a claim to the Iron Throne.
Rightful doesn’t mean whose right for the job. It’s whose lawfully and legally next in the line of succession. Robert didn’t just take the throne, he claimed it through his grandmother Rhaelle Targaryen. His claim is through her. It was however an illegitimate claim since there were three heirs in front of him for the throne who survived. Jon, Viserys and Dany, in that order.
Robert left no legitimate heirs. Gendry can’t take the throne, he’s a bastard. Cersei has no claim on the throne either, she’s not even slightly related to the Targaryens. Therefore the lawful line of succession reverts back to the direct Targaryen family. They are the family who created the Iron Throne and therefore have the only legitimate claim. It’s theirs. But in reality, the throne was never legally and lawfully Robert’s, it was always Jon’s.
