Planing off a piece of zuku (veneer) from the tanegi (pattern block) with a freshly tuned kanna. For me, this is the key step that makes Yosegi Zaiku what it is. All the other steps, from lumber selection, cutting and shaping the individual pieces, to gluing them into the tanegi, are about creating something you can plane off slices of veneer. And when it works, so satisfying. And when it doesn't, maddening.
