“We can’t take him home.”
“Asahi is going to kill us.”
“She loves cats! We can totally bring him home, I mean look at him, Ryuu!” Yuu said, holding up the dirty cat that he and his boyfriend literally just found in an alleyway. The cat was a friendly thing and had sauntered up to the two on their way home from practice and started rubbing up against their legs.
“That thing is filthy, she’s going to freak out if it even steps foot in the house,” Ryuu replied sternly. Although, he was a bit swayed by the dirty, purring mass of fur that was being held in front of his face.
Yuu pouted before cradling the cat in his arms, not caring about the dirt. He didn’t shower until he got home anyway. “Come on! That 7-eleven down that we pass sells pet shampoo and stuff! Let’s just go home, wash him, make him cute, then when Asahi gets home, she’ll want to keep him!” Yuu begged.
With a sigh, Ryu agreed. “Fine. But you stay outside. The old man inside probably doesn’t want two stinking volleyball players AND an unbathed animal in his shop.”
Flinging himself into the air (and subsequently startling the cat), Yuu shouted with glee. “Thank you so much Ryuu!” was the only thing that made it out of his mouth before he kissed the taller man on the cheek and dragged him toward the store. The cat was still safely tucked in the crook of his arm and happily purring again.
Thirty minutes and a grumbling Ryu later, the two made it back to the apartment.
“I know you’re carrying the cat, but why couldn’t you have carried one of the bags. Why did you insist on so much cat litter we don’t even know if Asahi is going to agree to keep it,” Ryu continued to grumble. He wasn’t even that mad, but between the after-practice fatigue and the 30 odd extra pounds of cat food and cat litter, he was allowed a bit of grouch.
An impish grin spread across Yuu’s face. “Well I like seeing my big, strong boyfriend working to make me happy.”
It was enough to appease Ryuu as he set down all the cat stuff. “Can you at least run warm water in the sink so we can wash this cat?”
Yuu nodded, agreeing to the request before he handed the cat to Ryu so he could run water without scaring the poor thing.
Things were going pretty well. The sink was full of warm water and the shampoo was within easy reach. Ryu carefully held the cat over the water before slowly lowering him in. Everything was fine until the cat realized it was getting wet, then there was a struggle.
Another twenty minutes and 6 different scratches later found two humans and one cat all dripping wet, standing in the kitchen.
“… At least he’s clean?” Ryu offered, fishing the cat out of the severely depleted water.
Yuu nodded. “Hey can you dry him so I can clean up the kitchen before Asahi gets back?”
“Yeah yeah, make the kitchen clean before our girlfriend gets home so she doesn’t flip shit,” Ryu said, rolling his eyes. Still, he took the cat into the bathroom and pulled out Asahi’s hair dryer so he could dry off the cat.
Yuu quickly got to work, mopping up the water that had spilled onto the floor. However, before he could move on to cleaning the water off the counter, the front doorknob jiggled.
Asahi opened the door carefully, holding a precious parcel in one hand, and called out, “I’m home, guys! And I have a bit of a surprise!”
She set her purse down by the door and took her shoes off. “Now, I know that you two have been wanting a pet for a while now and today I stopped by the shelter and picked up –” She trailed off when she realized that Yuu was standing in the kitchen, sopping wet.
“Uh… Where’s Ryu? Why are you wet?” Asahi asked cautiously, actually a little afraid of the answer. Then she noticed the sound of a hair dryer being used. “Why is Ryu using a hair dryer, they don’t have any hair.”
“Well he,” a special emphasis on the he because Asahi left before Ryu announced that today was a boy day, “is drying off a present we got for you??” A moment later, “But it looks like we all had the same idea. Ryu! Forget about drying him off all the way just come out here!”
The sound of the hair dryer stopped and Ryu peeked his head out of the bathroom door. “Asahi! You’re back!” And out he came with a slightly more dry cat in his arms. His eyes zeroed in on what Asahi was holding. “Oh my god you brought back a cat too!” he exclaimed, holding out the cat by his ribcage.
The tiny calico kitten in Asahi’s hand was lightly nibbling on one of the her fingers, but all Asahi could focus on was the alley cat in Ryu’s outstretched arms.
“I… Can we keep them both?” she asked her boyfriends. Yuu’s smile could have split his face in two, he could almost see hearts forming in Asahi’s eyes. She really did love cats.
“YEAH WE CAN!” Ryu shouted before setting the half dry cat down and throwing his arms around Asahi’s broad shoulders, carefully avoiding the kitten in her hands. “What should we name them?”
Laying a small kiss on Ryu’s forehead, Asahi smiled. “Well, the shelter told me this kitten was found living with rabbits, so I was thinking Alice? I don’t know about the cat you found though…” Thinking about it, she started worrying her bottom lip.
“Well, I was thinking O’Malley. Like that disney movie??” Yuu piped up, finally getting around to sopping up the water on the counter. “We did find him in an alley.”
The newly named O’Malley was rubbing up against Asahi’s legs now. Another small smile graced Asahi’s lips as she picked him up as well (causing Yuu and Ryu’s hearts to grow two sizes, the saps). She settled down on their couch and set both cats in her lap.
"Welcome to the family, O'Malley and Alice."
