haii!!! how are you doing? in light of recent events (lee know's barrage of bubble messages for the past weeks about his new and horrific diet appointed by his physical trainer (no, not a nutritionist of any sort) and his excessive exercise habits and deficient caloric intake and constant Hunger and so on) i'm in need of some feel-good content. can you tell i feel insane because he's constantly sharing all these harmful things and i wish he would stop because it's nuts, even compared to the already-nuts idol standard.

anyway. i got carried away but i came here because i'm curious if you have something in the works or if you have some off the top of your head fanfic recommendations! minsung or gen, something that you read and uplifts your mood, maybe?

sorry for venting i just feel crazy seeing all this from the outside and feeling like i can't do anything!! you don't have to reply to the ask if you want to avoid any kind of conversation about this which i understand! you can post something separately or nothing at all. im always happy to hear from your little corner of the internet. have a nice week!!

So, I'll reply to this backward to give people who want to see the recs the opportunity to avoid seeing more discussion of the upsetting behaviours in question. I'll put my response to that under the cut.

For recs--I don't tend to read fluff, but these are all well-written and thoughtful and have their sweet moments, so take that as you will. In order of most recently bookmarked, here are some I come back to a lot these days:

You can definitely tell me that. It is utterly insane, and it's so disheartening to see both him and Changbin gets sucked into this shitty spiral.

Kind of a digression, but I have to say, this is why my heart sinks every time I see a member has some new deal with a fashion brand. Obviously I cannot prove anything, but there seems to be a very strong correlation between when a member starts being consistently partnered or courted for couture fashion, and when they start behaving in these massively disordered ways. It happened to Felix, it happened to I.N, it happened to Chan, it happened to Han, it happened to Lee Know, and now it's happened to Changbin as well. I hear less about Seungmin and Hyunjin when it comes to this stuff, but I wouldn't be shocked if they suffer from it, too. You get these preternaturally beautiful people--who are judged so heavily on their physical appearance and already very restricted--into situations where they're pressured by the company and their own fans to meet even more ridiculous, unhealthy standards to get these fashion deals, and voila, you have a guy who not that long ago talked about eating well and exercising only for his health turning into someone who's barely eating and sacrificing time during his personal holiday with friends to go to the fucking gym multiple times in a single day. like, what the fuck. to say nothing of the impact it has on the fans who seem them talking like this.

I don't even have social media aside from Tumblr (and I guess YouTube, but I use that like a video search engine; I don't get new information from it or see Discourse) but even I am acutely aware of these distressing behaviors the members are exhibiting. You know it's bad. To be honest, between that, Div1's hamfisted attempts to shoehorn AI into everything at the cost of quality and artistic integrity (such as it is--and I mean specifically on the label's side, not the members themselves), the massive shift toward the fashion and brand partnerships in general, the growth of the fandom and subsequent increase in the visibility of akgaes and antifans, and the shift of more 'authentic' content like livestreams onto Instagram and TikTok and (whateverthefuck JYP is trying to do with Bubble now), I am really starting to feel fatigued with SKZ. I love their music, and I think they're very, very funny and talented, but Christ, engaging with their content nowadays feels like a 50/50 shot on whether it's going to lift or depress my mood.

I know I'm not alone in this either. A lot of the writers I really love/d in the fandom seem to have dropped out completely or almost completely, and I can't blame them, because that's basically what's happened to me as well. I have a very finely tailored list of search criteria on AO3, but even so, I haven't seen anything that appeals to me in weeks. The vast majority of when I'm getting in results is severely out of character AU, and I would say 95% of what I see is functionally pwp. And obviously that floats the boats of many people, but my point is that there used to be so much more variety, a lot more grounded character work, and I am just not seeing that nearly as often anymore.

I really, really have hopes of making more progress on the things I'm working on. But work has been busy, I live in the US (which feels like more of a mistake every day) so the atmosphere is a bit poisonous at all times, and as I mentioned, SKZ hasn't been a reliable safe place recently. But hopefully. Hopefully.

Hoy les traigo solamente una recomendación, una canción:

Esta canción, para mí, es una de las más románticas. Tiene una melodía dulce, acogedora, tranquila; algo que creo,

cuando estás con aquella persona indicada, debes de sentir.

La lírica es simple pero para mí, como lo expresa este cantante, cada frase, cada palabra que pronuncia... arrastra amor, deseo, pasión en una nota dulce, frágil, con ternura.

La única forma en la que me imagino es posible expresarte a alguien que amas.

Es una de esas canciones que tú mente reproduce automáticamente cuando recuerdas o ves a esa persona especial. Donde tus ojos brillan, tus pupilas se dilatan y tú corazón parece saltar del pecho.

ASCS40 Trip | Thursday

Sadly, today was the final day of the conference. As the hours passed, I realised that I wasn’t ready for it to end. I tried to appreciate every last minute. After a lovely breakfast with some of my wonderful Classics friends, I made my way to the main lecture theatre for the plenary session, presented by Lynette Jensen: “Lego Classics: Serious or Superficial?” As a big fan of the Lego Classicist, it was fantastic to hear about how he started, and about the broader impact of Lego as a medium in presenting Classics. 

After the plenary session, we all enjoyed another fantastic morning tea before the final day’s panels’ began. These are the last two sessions I attended: 

I thoroughly enjoyed each and every paper. I’ve always been fascinated by Augustus’ moral laws and the AWAWS (Australasian Women in Ancient World Studies) panel certainly made me think I should investigate a topic or two related to the reforms as a side project in the future.

The Death and the Underworld panel was a very fitting way to end the conference. Although I couldn’t get a seat inside, I thoroughly enjoyed the talks. As a huge Doctor Who fan, it was interesting to hear such a well-thought-out comparison between ancient and modern (pop culture) interpretations of the afterlife.

And so the panels ended, seemingly as quickly as they began. All of the attendees joined together for one final afternoon tea, in which a very special announcement was made. At the conference, OPTIMA offered 3 prizes for postgraduates who were giving a paper. Those who entered were judged on the quality of their argument and their presentation, and...

It was the perfect end to the conference. I went back to my accommodation on a high, elated to have been part of such a wonderful event. Though it was sad for it to come to an end I met some wonderful new people and strengthened friendships I made at Amphorae XII last year. I am lucky, also, that I’ve been able to enjoy an extra night in Armidale due to the lack of flights which connect to Hobart, so I topped off the day with dinner and a stroll through the town centre with @cavedraconem and @katnerys-targaryen  

And now, with my bags packed, and the hour getting late, I must head to bed. The journey isn’t over quite yet, though. I have a 7.5 hour layover in Sydney tomorrow. I may or may not have an adventure planned already ;)
