My inquisitor Ali loves to collect and draw insects which is what got varric to start calling her butterfly
Varric calls Ashalla Firefly for a few reasons, first she uses fire a lot, secondly she flies around the battle quickly, and finally he made a remark one night in the hinterlands about how the color of the mark looks the same as the fireflies.
After traveling through the Exalted Plains, Ashalla Lavellan misses her clan greatly.
Being in the Exalted Plains had begun to make Ashalla tremendously homesick, and not for Skyhold. When they had met the Dalish hunter while wandering she had been happy, it had been so long since she’d seen another Dalish. Sure, she was not the only elf, but Sera was adamant about not being elfy, and Solas, as amazing and wonderful as he was, was no Dalish and even disliked the Dalish to a point.
For Ash, seeing the Halla and the Aravels brought back warm memories of home. Memories of her clan wandering through plains and forests, and even a desert once before. It brought memories of her father, herding the Halla and teaching her how to ride one. It brought memories of sitting with Keeper Deshanna, learning the history of her people and the ways of her magic. Memories upon memories flooded back and only worked to make her miss her clan more and more.
Now, lying with Solas in their tent at the end of another day on their way back to Skyhold, she thinks of her Clan when he speaks. “I have not interacted with a Dalish Clan since they turned me away.” She glances at him, his steel eyes warm towards her as he opens a conversation.
“Thoughts?” she can only ask, worried of a fight that usually happens when the Dalish are brought up between them.
He shifts under her slightly, his arm around her as he makes it easier to see her. “They are rather accepting of you.”
“I did work for it,” she jokes, “a golden Halla, dead brother, and strangely hard to find elfroot.”
He chuckles as he plays slightly with a piece of her hair that has come loose from the braid he did for her, “true, but even before that they did not act cold towards you.”
“I am Dalish,” she reminds him, “even here, so far from my clan, I am one of them.”
He nods, his lips pressed in thought, “do you miss your clan?”
“Very much so,” she tells him as she traces her finger against his chest absently. “More so now I think,” she confesses, “seeing my people, brings memories of my clan.” He nods once more and she looks towards his face again.
“The Dalish were never open towards my knowledge before,” he states, “but with you, you are.” His eyes trace along her face, seemingly following the Vallaslin that marks it, “you listen more than entire clans I visited many years ago.”
“Why did stop trying?” she questions, “I’m certain I am not the only Dalish who would listen.”
“I was told many times to leave,” he reminds her, “by multiple clans, thus I formed the thought they would never listen and I should not waste my knowledge upon them.”
“But you told me,” she tells him, “even knowing I was Dalish.”
“You asked,” His eyes, as usual during discussions, never leave her, “and listened.” Ashalla does not reply, and they fall into a few moments of silence before he asks, “would your clan have been as open as you, or would they have turned me away?”
Her eyes return to him as she considers the question. “Perhaps,” she states, “my Keeper was never one to turn any of our people away.” She tells him, “Even when we had four mages born to the clan, she refused to send even one to another clan.” She recalls the early mornings spent with the others, practicing their magic with the Keeper sitting and watching. “Other clans would have done just that, but Deshanna was adamant about not separating one from family, and she saw sending one of Clan Lavellan’s people away as just that.” Solas listens quietly as she describes her keeper, “she was the same with outsiders, if an elf came to us, wishing to learn, or needing help, or wanting to join, Deshanna would simply allow them, aid them, or teach them.”
Solas smiles gently towards Lavellan, “you speak highly of her, with quite a lot of fondness.”
“She was the closest I had to a mother,” Ashalla admits, “my own died when I was a year old, a disease that had come to the clan, but when as I grew up the Keeper was always kind, and when my magic manifested she became a mentor.” She pauses for a moment, “I believe you would enjoy her, and she would likely approve of you.”
It was a moment before Solas replies, “perhaps one day you may take me to meet them.”
A small smile forms at the thought for Ashalla, she imagines what her clan would think, and how Solas would fit and interact with them all, “my father would be tougher,” she states, “more protective and skeptical when it comes to me.”
“Ah,” Solas nods, “I would have to be careful then.”
Silence falls once more, and Ashalla can feel herself growing tired as they lie in the semi dark tent, only lit by a small ball of flame Solas had projected into the tent. She watches with tired eyes as the flame dims, “it is late ma vhenan,” he tells her, “and if you wish to return to Skyhold by the afternoon we will have to leave at dawn.” Ashalla only nods against his chest, as the flame goes out she listens to his heart and his breathing. The sound lulling her to a sleep with dreams of aravels and Halla moving across an open plain. When she wakes she wonders slightly if she will have received news of Clan Lavellan yet.
My Inquisitor Ashalla Lavellan: proudly Dalish and utterly unsure of what she is doing in the prologue, aside from closing rifts, saving lives, giving the occaisonal witty line, and giving bedroom eyes to Solas.
basically I’ve been playing her the last four days and taking a lot of screen caps so more are coming. These are just some of the good ones from the prologue. I’ll probably also try writing and doing shit with her cause I dig her and the way she’s developing.
feel free to ask about her, or not, but either way i’ll be posting shit.
also some screenshots below that are just my aesthetic because they look pretty cool
