HER FIRST MISTAKE WAS NOT TURNING AROUND AND LEAVING WHEN SHE SAW HIM. but emilia had been there first, and the town was too small to turn the other direction every time she saw asher around. her second mistake was moving from the table she had been seated at to the bar, that way she could have just enough view of him from where he was sitting that it wouldn’t look weird if her eyes wandered. and the third mistake ?   making accidental eye contact with him from across the room, convenient while he was talking to some tragic looking blonde. emilia glanced away as soon as she realized, but it was too late ;   not even two minutes later, she feels a presence beside her.   “ if you’re here to buy me a drink, you’re a little late, ”   she says without looking up, taking a long swig of her drink before willing herself to look up at him. the brunette flashes him a smirk.   “ but if you’d like to wait, i wouldn’t mind another. ”

FEW THINGS PROVIDE ELLE UNWAVERING COMFORT :   hugs for her daughter, rereading one of her favorite books, and baking. as much as she loves baking with her daughter, it’s not exactly the same as doing it alone, and today with the apartment to herself elle decides to put on some music and try that cookie recipe she’s been wanting to attempt for awhile now. unfortunately, she’s already halfway through the dough, flour speckled on her apron, when she realizes she doesn’t have enough peanut butter for the recipe she wants. she could go to the store, but that means leaving looking a complete mess... and she could wait for elijah to get home, but that would mean, well, waiting. in the year and change they’ve lived in the apartment, she hasn’t gotten a chance to meet her neighbors really, but this seemed as good of a time as ever. the first two doors don’t answer  ( unsurprising, considering it’s the middle of a work day ) ,  but when the third door swings open elle takes a step back, mouth opening to ask her question. the sight of asher makes her pause for a second, taken aback.   “ ah, hi, ”   she hesitates, not sure why she suddenly feels nervous.   “ um, i live down the hall... asher, right ?   do you, um, have any peanut butter i can borrow ?   i just need a cup or so. ”
