Oh, the Hawke parents are such a fascinating topic! Leandra left Kirkwall with a fairy-tale's ideal of forbidden romance, and she spent the next two decades getting slapped in the face by the reality of it. Whereas Malcolm viewed romance as freedom, and as a man whose entire life was lived in chains, he knew freedom was hard work.

Like most things, Hawke inherited his father's idea of love, colored by his mother's perception. Love is difficult. Love is sacrifice and grief and carrying on in the face of it, because a life without love is too terrible to contemplate. Love is a life preserver to cling to in the storm of everything else. Love (in all forms - family, friends, romantic partners) is necessary for your health, but it isn't necessarily healthy.

And Anders... Well, for most of his life, love was an impossibility. In this relationship, Anders is the one with a fairy-tale idea of romance as the salvation he craves. But he's still Anders, and he still believes he can't have good things because he poisons everything he touches.

You see why this dynamic can't end well.

Like, Solavellan plays a decade-long game of cat-and-mouse that ends in Solas abandoning his plan to bring about the apocalypse for her. Mahalla rallies the Dalish to oppose him, and then she drops everything to walk off into the Fade with him. They're certifiably Weird about each other. They're enemies for ten years, and they still can't bring themselves to truly regret loving each other. This is the shit mythologies are built on, y'all.

The thing about Sam/Morrigan is they're both very independent people. They don't need each other, but they will choose each other every time regardless. Sometimes, this is one of the things they love most about each other. Other times, it's infuriating. You can just ask for help if you're struggling! It's a novel concept, but one these hypocrites have trouble grasping.
