We met in May. I don't remember it too clearly. That's fine, it just kind of reaffirms our current situation, I guess.
I was out cold. Post-surgery for my broken ankle, and they had to re-breake it after it was healing improperly. I was put into the same room as you, which was a bit odd, considering our circumstances. Your dry-heaving slowly pulled me out of my induced sleep. After your spell, you dragged yourself back to your bed. That's all I remember from that day.
The day after, I realized it was you. We exchanged small talk, but never talking about why you were there. The baldness and the vomitting spoke volumes on their own, and my neatly wrapped cast transmitted an obvious message, the result of stupidity and poor judgement. I was scheduled for a week, and your stay's length remained undetermined.
"Does it hurt?"
"Not really, it's more like a dull ache. The painkillers help. How about you?"
"It's just like a constant state of uncomfortable now."
"Now?"
"I just got used to the pain, ya know? You get used to a lot of things like that, when it never goes away and it's there every fucking minute of your life. The surgeries, the heartbreak, the preemptive goodbyes, the fact that I'll probably be gone soon. And gone forever."
I didn't try to argue with you. You seemed set on that idea. I stared up at the speckled ceiling. "How can you get used to that?"
"'The human mind can subjugate anything-even real pain.' Bruce Lee."
I looked at us for a moment. I couldn't imagine subjugating dying.
