Ashleigh Johnson’s 2016 Olympic water polo medal is in a trophy case at her mother’s house, sitting alongside ribbons and trophies from her previous life as a teenage competitive swimmer. (Despite her talent, her swimming career didn’t last long — she prefers the mental game surrounding team sports.) It’s appropriate that her mother become guardian over the most important piece of hardware that an athlete can receive. As Johnson recalls, it was parental concern that led her mother to enroll her children in potentially life-saving swimming lessons (a must in Miami, where Johnson grew up) and an abundance of patience that kept her from intervening during the kids’ weekly water-polo matches, a play-session reward from their swim coach. Even now, as she prepares for her second Olympic Games, in Tokyo, Johnson is still drawing on the lessons she learned from wrestling with her siblings.
