CONRAIL WESTBOUND ROLLS PAST THE STATION - ASHTABULA, OHIO - JANUARY 31, 1999

Westbound Conrail freight train BUPI-31 rolls past the Ashtabula station. The station would survive Big Blue and remain standing well into the CSX era, making it until 2018 when CSX finally tore it down. Behind me, the Buffalo to Pittsburgh train will swing to the south, leaving the mainline and heading down the Youngstown Line, and then beyond to Pittsburgh.

About 800 or so feet back from the head end, the train is crossing the Ashtabula River. Unfortunately, that crossing became the site of the worst train accident in U.S. history (until 1918), when in 1876 the bridge over the river collapsed while a LS&MS passenger train was crossing over. The disastrous wreck and following fire killed 92 out of 160 people that had been on that train.
