African Americans need to do better.

I'm sickened. I just saw a video of a bald black man harassing an asian man on the subway and spraying him.

I know this stemmed from Trump. And for all I know this black man couldve been a Trump supporter (shame of yall).

But African Americans are suppose to know and do better.

There is not an excuse for victims of abuse to become abusers. It us wrong. As badly as this country has discriminated and treated us, we should know better.

I dunno whether to attribute this black man harassing this asian man on the subway to Trumpism or not. But as African Americans regardless of political affiliation we are suppose to be better then this.

PhD Student Dismissed From UIUC After Working Remotely to Protect His Mother

A fourth-year doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) may face deportation after being dismissed from his studies due to noncompliance with COVID-19 testing. Yidong Chen, who goes by the nickname Ivor, lived with his mother in Champaign-Urbana while working remotely as a teaching assistant in the fall semester of 2020.

Because his mother has greater chances than he does of contracting COVID-19, Chen barely left their home until the start of the spring semester of 2021. Chen opted out of his university’s policy on COVID-19 testing, which changed multiple times throughout the past few months. On Dec. 21, 2020, Chen received a disciplinary charge notice that accused him of noncompliance with COVID-19 testing. A hearing took place last month on Jan. 29. During the hearing, Chen explained his reasons for his noncompliance. Given the university’s “unclear and evolving instructions,” he assumed that if he worked from home 100% of the time, he would not need to undergo COVID-19 testing. What happened next baffled Chen and the Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO), a labor union representing teaching assistants and graduate assistants at UIUC. “In response, the members of the disciplinary panel strongly rebuked Ivor’s behavior, and began several irrelevant, demeaning, and unreasonable lines of questioning including whether or not Ivor received health insurance from the University, whether he receives a 401K, and how often he visits the grocery store,” the union said in a statement.

After a few minutes of closed deliberation, the panel issued the following due to Chen’s noncompliance:

* Dismissal from the University for one year, effective immediately

* Two 1,000-word reflective essays

* A trespass notification that prohibits Ivor from setting foot on University property, subject to enforcement by the University Police Department

* A petition letter for University re-entry after one year

* 80 hours of community service

* Evidence of successful academic or work history during his one-year dismissal

The GEO addressed the punishment, noting that Chen received a testing exemption for the spring 2021 semester after he applied for it. “In other words, the same situation that Ivor experienced in the Fall and Spring semesters resulted in two radically different outcomes: In the Fall semester, the disciplinary panel decided Ivor’s reasons not to test regularly were cause for dismissal, whereas in the Spring semester the McKinley Health Center decided Ivor’s reasons not to test warranted a COVID-19 testing exemption,” the union said.

As Chen’s visa is tied to his status as a graduate student, he is now in danger of being deported. The GEO has launched a petition and an email campaign calling on UIUC to reinstate him. “Not only is it a disproportionate response, those responses are not designed for international students, because for a domestic student, say the temporary expulsion, you can go home for three months and work,” said GEO leader Advith Govindarajan, according to WCIA. “But if you’re being deported during a pandemic, it just makes the situation so much more difficult and complicated.”

In a statement on Monday, Provost Andreas Cangellaris defended the panel’s decision and maintained that COVID-19 safety protocols are regularly communicated. “The procedure affords students due process, including the right to a written notice of charges, the opportunity to have a hearing with an advisor present, the right to present evidence and testimony and the right to appeal a disciplinary action. Decisions to sanction students are not made lightly, nor without warning,” Cangellaris said, according to The News-Gazette. “Our COVID-19 safety protocols — as well as the way we go about the requirement for regular testing and possible consequences for violating the protocols — have been broadly, regularly and frequently communicated throughout the pandemic, on virtually every platform that is available to us.”

It amazes me that people are not taking Covid 19 seriously, and deliberately coughing on people or food or licking shelves or attacking people.

In NJ a guy was arrested for terrorism after coughing and laughing at a food store worker. Its bioterrorism.

In Pennsyvania, woman purposefully coughs on produce. $35,000 of food had to be thrown away and the section cleaned. There is already food scarcity. Its bioterrorism.

In Missouri, a man is arrested for licking shelves. Arrested for bio terrorism.

Racists, afraid and angry about Covid 19, confronts an Asian, accuses them as though its their fault, then deliberately and physically attacks the person who they falsely believe who has it and risking fluid transfer? Many diseases came from colonialism and/or many people blamed people from your heritage at some point on history, you do not want to play this game. Diseases do not discriminate. Disease will take you can call you host no matter how much money you have, what insurance you have, or what color or race you are.

Long story short.

This is not the time to be playing games. Don't be an asshole or an idiot. People have no money or food and people are dying at war levels. Its not the time to be selfish and egocentric. People's anxiety and fears are not objects of entertainment.

y’all remember learning about that time when white people were pissed they couldn’t import africans anymore and decided to take asians?

Basically, from the 1840’s up until the latter part of the 19th century, once the African slave trade had started winding down and people wanted cheap labor, they imported Chinese and Indian laborers called “coolies”. 

 These workers’ main differentiation from African slaves, were that they had contracts where they would sign on for two-five years. In no ways were these contracts fair, but they existed. They were paid under twenty cents per day, on average. However, over a dollar would be taken from them every month in order to pay off their debts. Most of these people were drugged and trafficked or promised they would get free necessities and boat tickets to Europe. Others were there to pay off debts, abducted as pirate bounty, or sold by their own family members. 

These people were locked in holding pens for months on end until there was enough for a full shipload to America. When they arrived at the ships all of their clothes were burned and they were scrubbed down with brooms of wood and straw. Then, they were packed below decks and most times weren’t allowed to go up for fresh air. The ships they were crammed into were almost identical, if not the same, as the ships African slave traders used and there was just as high of a mortality rate during transport. More than 80% of them were sent to sugar plantations where they were treated no better than the enslaved Africans.

 This “coolie trade” was certainly a dark period in Asian-American history (especially once the importation grew to other Asian countries, which ones, however, I have not done thorough enough research on), but it’s something I thought was important to share. The cruelties of the African slave trade is something that we discuss more often nowadays, but the version affecting Asians is hardly talked about at all, seeing as I literally only found out about it a month ago.
