Yup. I grew up very involved with our local zoo and I used to defend them because of their successful seal breeding and release programme and tiger breeding until I realised that there were so many animals kept purely for entertainment... Like, I get they need money... But I just realised I would never be comfortable with them keeping flamingoes (feeding them dyed food to stay pink in a tiny enclosure with mirrors to avoid loneliness) or camels in a space so small they can't run etc

(to clarify I’m not ok with keeping them at all, it was just the living situations that made it click for me because I remember being a young kid and writing them a letter saying I was concerned about the penguin enclosure being small but I just gradually came to accept it until I took a step back and objectively looked at what the zoo I loved was doing to the animals I loved - yeah they do some good but it doesn’t justify how the other animals are kept to just look at)

I was pretty similar, zoos are the very last thing I gave up to become vegan, as I had such fond memories of them. It was this excellent essay which finally convinced me, I recommend it all the time but it really is such a good discussion of the topic and has definitely informed my own views.

yes!!! i got help from a very kind woman on the bus who sat beside me and talked to me so that i didn’t have to be alone !! she even went a few stops past hers for me !! and i woke up my mom for a second when i got home just to say hi!! was very close to crying for like half an hour but once again women are superior !! thanks for sending this bby ❤️❤️🥺🥺🥺🥺
