Wait which fragments do you have as tattoos?

Okay!! First of all: apologies for taking so long to reply; my work week is the weekend and it takes literally everything from me except my ability to complain, especially my ability to do any sort of book-looking research, and I wanted to make sure I got all the fragments right! (I mean, I know what they mean, but the numbers, etc).

I use Anne Carson’s translations (from If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho); I’ve read a few translations of the fragments and hers are thee best, in my estimation (Willis Barnstone’s are the most technically accurate, probably, and he was an absolute gem of a man as well as a lion of translation who was exactly what you’d imagine when imagining a translator named Willis Barnstone; Anne Carson is also exactly like you’d imagine but I suspect she leans into it).

So! I have six Sappho fragments (in Greek) tattooed! In order of acquisition:

1. 120: I am not one who likes to wound/rather I have a quiet mind

2. 126: may you sleep on the breast of your delicate friend

3. 63: but may it happen to me/all

4. 36: I long and seek after

5. 147: someone will remember us/I say/even in another time

6. 188: mythweaver

1 is on my left forearm, 2 is very discreet on the right side of my chest in light lilac ink, 3 is on the front of my right thigh (as I step forward, you know), 4 is on my right bicep above the alchemical symbol for salt water, 5 is on my collarbones (v small; the goal is to integrate it with a lyric from the B-52’s song “Moon 83”—don’t feel out of place/there are others like you) and 6 is on my left bicep above the alchemical symbol for purification in a crucible; 1, 2, and 5 were done by professionals, the others are self sticknpokes.

Will these be all the fragments I get? Undoubtedly not!! Will I get them all? Undoubtedly not!! But there are so many bangers! I conversed with you in a dream (fr. 134)? not one girl I think/who looks on the light of the sun/will ever/have wisdom/like this (fr. 56)????????? Barssssssssss

Hi hi hiiiiiiii! ✨

Kerroppi: hmmmmmm okay . . . I dunno! I don’t really have one I specifically think of, but there’s several I watch over and over for no real reason, which I think counts, and they are . . . hmm. Zodiac, the David Fincher movie. Star Trek: First Contact. Also Contact, with Jodie Foster. The Remains of the Day. My favorite French movie La Ceremonie, which is . . . not comforting. I’ll also put on some garbage found-footage horror movie any time. I absolutely need to go back to therapy, why do you ask?

Bonbonribbon: I currently have fourteen tattoos (I think? I might have forgotten one), and am desperate for more; six of them are stick-and-pokes I did myself. Five are fragments of Sappho in Greek, two are alchemical symbols (purification on the left inner biceps, salt water on the right), one’s an Underwood #5 typewriter on the small of my back (it’s very large, directly over my spine, and was my second tattoo; do not recommend)(but! when I broke my back the surgical team was extremely diligent about lining it all back up again; it now incorporates 3 inches of the 10-inch surgical scar and that’s so cool, to me). I have a fountain pen nib on my arm that I don’t love and want to get fixed someday; I have a large replica of a Charles Rennie Mackintosh design on my left shoulder (which I unexpectedly saw in person at a museum; the museum staff were as excited as I was). I have the symbol for fire on my right middle finger, the Sagittarian arrow on my left middle finger. An enormous jawbone on my right shoulder blade, and the Roman numerals for “25” inside it, which is a reference to Emily Dickinson’s poem “Wild Nights.” I love getting tattooed; it’s one of my favorite physical experiences. The pain is so clean, you know? Anyway, the next ones are Sad Milhouse from The Simpsons, and a chest piece with a B-52’s lyric (don’t feel out of place/there are others like you from the song “Moon 83”) along my collar bones and the phases of the moon down my sternum.

Charmmy Kitty: my video game exposure is pretty limited to early Nintendo systems, so: Kirby’s Dreamland for the GameBoy it is, at least based on memories of my ten-year-old self; as an adult it’s gotta be Super Metroid (SNES), the scariest game of all time.

Veep! One of the greatest shows ever made! Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s best role! The most exquisite collection of insults ever put to film! Of course, it was made by Armando Iannucci, who did The Thick of It, which you might have heard of (since it’s British, I mean, and so British I’ve only watched it with I’d guess like 70% comprehension, even with captions on)??

I loooove Veep, even though it’s so uncomfortable (I usually suffer from intense secondhand embarrassment, so it’s amazing I can watch it at all). I can only get through a few episodes at a time, since it’s both a) incredibly, cringingly uncomfortable, as I said, and b) so densely packed with jokes it kind of overloads my brain. RECOMMENDED.

What are the other options in the running for best Nicole Kidman performances?

HOKAY:

This was slightly tougher than I though, not because I don’t think Nicole Kidman’s a good actress, and not because I think she’s a great actress, but I had to lock in KoaSD as my ice-queen Nicole performance and after a jaunt through her IMDB, yep, I feel good about it, and yep, I’m locked in to my (personal) top three (this is not meant to challenge anyone or start a debate; I do not have the stomach for it).

In no order but chronological (for fairness; also I did films only):

Sexpot Nicole: To Die For (still untouchable)

Charming Nicole: Paddington (she’s so good in it and please let her do jokes more often)

Ice-Queen Nicole: The Killing of a Sacred Deer (same sort of mold as Eyes Wide Shut, but . . . better)

PANDAPPLE 🎶: I listen to WHAT. EVER. My Spotify history is a mess. But! I usually actively listen to music while traveling or cleaning, and 99% of the time it’s either classic dancefloor bangers (your FISHER, your Alice Deejay, your Kylies Minogue) or lyrical rap/hip-hop (your Petes and Bas, your Kendrick Lamar, your Tribe and Wu, your Prof and Missy and Chika and Tierra Whack). I love a thumping bassline, what can I say?

If it’s vinyl it’s usually piano jazz (your Ryo Fukui, your Georges Shearing, your Bill Evanses) or folk (Karen Dalton! Joan Armatrading! Connie Converse!)

But usually it’s whatever song jda or I have stuck in one of our heads, and whatever happens after that (today was “Turn Down For What” and Parliament’s “Flash Light” which led to a very funky morning).

LLOROMANNIC 🍕: I have long been an advocate of Making Pizza In The Home, mostly because I have a very particular and weird favorite, and nobody will make it for me: olive oil base, Bosc pear, gorgonzola cheese, red onion, prosciutto (optional), arugula, and balsamic vinegar. If it sounds like a lot, it is, and it is SO GOOD.

Runner-up is a Maison Derrière perennial favorite; it is also weird but there’s a pizza place that makes it: white sauce, artichoke hearts, and black olives. We call it Blood Pizza for reasons that are lost to the sands of time (“it tastes like blood,” jda interjects, and you know, it does, but in a good kind of way)
