hello i am adding my contribution to the zoey angst in baby bean au
_-_-_
Bean just had her 1st birthday yesterday. There weren't too many people there; just her moms and Zoey and Bobby and Celine, but it didn't feel empty. Warmth and love spilled freely from all of them to each other all night. When Bean had to go to bed, she received hugs and kisses from all of them.
She blinked fondly at them, her tiny chin resting on her Appa's shoulder as Rumi took her upstairs. She gave a small wave and a little babble. Zoey smiled, returning the wave, but a pang of longing stabbed harshly in her chest.
It was early the next morning when she felt it: a tear in the Honmoon. Zoey got ready quickly, but heard no noise from Rumi and Mira's bedroom. They must've still been asleep.
Bean was old enough now for either Rumi or Mira to come with her on hunts while the other looked after her, but Zoey still preferred going alone. She was more expendable than either of them.
Best leave them be, Zoey thought, They must be exhausted after yesterday.
She slipped out the front door and went to face the demons alone.
---
Mira woke with a start, Bean was screaming her head off.
"Hey, little one, it's okay, Mama's here, shhh...shh..." Mira gathered Bean up into her arms, bouncing her gently and rubbing her hand up and down her baby's back. But nothing soothed her.
Rumi stirred next.
"Whas- goin' on?" she said, eloquently, her hair mussed from deep sleep.
"Shh, shh." Mira hushed, before turning to face Rumi, "I don't know, she won't stop screaming."
Bean cried again, banging her little fists on Mira's back, her patterns - normally hard to see unless you looked hard enough - flared bright red.
Then they felt it.
The Honmoon wailed, and so did Bean, her little voice cracking from overuse.
"Oh shit." Mira whispered, realisation dawning, "Where's Zoey?"
---
Zoey dragged her shaking finger along the tear, humming a much softer version of Golden; it was all she could manage. The tear collapsed, and with it, Zoey.
She hit the dirt hard. Warmth pooled beneath her, and she raised a trembling hand to her rapidly dwindling line of sight and barely winced when she saw it was covered in various shades of red.
She coughed and a glob of blood splattered to the dirt. It was too late to call anyone. Her phone lay shattered in her pocket, having borne the brunt of a club swung at her thighs.
Theoretically she could reach into the Honmoon and call for Rumi and/or Mira, but really, why should she bother them? They need rest. They need to be there for Bean. They need...
Zoey's head lolled limp on the dirt, and her eyes closed.
---
"Mira, it's bad." Rumi's voice crackled through Mira's phone, "Get the kit ready, I'm going to my best to stabilise her here, and then I'm going to teleport."
"Got it already. Just bring our girl back."

i was thinking about how Bean might have a stronger connection to the Honmoon than any of the girls, and thus be able to sense when either it or one of its hunters is in danger. Then that thought became this, so oopsie?
RIGHT AFTER HER BIRTHDAY????
