What are your thoughts on instead of young Derek falling in love with Paige, he falls in love with Stiles, and instead of Paige dying, Stiles dies (But he comes back to life later because I can’t handle the pain). Idk if anyone has already thought of this, or made a fanfic on it, but I’ve been through the young Derek tag on AO3 and I haven’t seen anything like it.

There’s a fic called Fly a Little Faster, which involves time travel, which is sort of what you’re describing. You should definitely check it out if you’re interested in a play on the Paige situation with young!Sterek.

And yeah, I 100% think Derek would’ve fallen for Stiles if they’d been the same age in high school. Paige was written to mirror Stiles in a lot of ways (and they even picked an actress with a lot of similarities, appearance-wise), so all the snark, challenge, and slight misfit tendencies that drew Derek to Paige would have drawn him to Stiles as well.

One thing I’ve got to wonder about, though, is whether things would’ve hit the point of manipulations and uncontrollable Alphas if Derek were with Stiles. Because as similar as they are, there’s one major difference between Paige and Stiles.

We find out, when Paige is dying, that she’d known what Derek was, more or less. She’d known there were supernatural things happening in town, she was clever and observant and she’d pieced it together (another way she and Stiles are similar). 

But she didn’t say anything. She kept it to herself. And I have to wonder, if Stiles was in the same position –– if he’d been picking up on the same stuff, if he’d noticed his boyfriend prooobably had some supernatural weirdness going on... would he have stayed quiet about it? Or would he have done what he’d done in the very first episode with Scott, come out and said “hey dude, you kind of seem like a werewolf.”

And really though, think about it. If Stiles had noticed Derek picking up sounds he shouldn’t be hearing, being stronger than he should’ve been, he would’ve commented. And if Stiles had commented, even jokingly, about his boyfriend being some kind of wolfman, would Derek have still agreed to let his boyfriend be given the bite without so much as a conversation first?

With Paige, Peter manipulated the hell out of Derek, ostensibly through some serious fear of rejection. That’s why he agreed to let Ennis bite her first, and didn’t talk to her about it. But if Stiles had already opened that door –– and we know Stiles would have. Especially early Stiles, season one Stiles? He was not the quietly observing and keeping theories from his loved ones type –– I can’t imagine that Derek wouldn’t brave a conversation before asking Ennis to bite him.

Of course, Peter might just decide to “helpfully” arrange the attack anyway, that’s definitely a Peter move. And things might’ve played out exactly the same either way.

But I’m curious to know what everyone else thinks. If Stiles had been in Paige’s place back then, would he have mentioned his boyfriend’s supernatural hotness? Would Derek have felt emboldened enough to be honest, and to ask him if he wanted the bite, instead of making the choice for him? And, ultimately, would that have changed anything or would Stiles have met the same fate Paige did?

“Just… talk to me, ok?” He hadn’t expected this, hadn’t thought it through enough, maybe. He’d just been focused on winning the bet, on rewatching a childhood favorite, on Derek sharing a room with him for some one on one, not-life-threatening-for-once hangout time. But then Derek had slipped away without a word just after the film’s most tear-jerking moment and not come back. After five minutes, Stiles had paused the movie. After ten, he’d gone looking for Derek. The bathroom door had been closed but even Stiles’ human ears could pick out the shaky breaths falling behind it. Now, when Derek spoke up, his voice was deceptively even:

“I’m fine.”

“That’s what the not fine people say,” Stiles shot back, and sighed at the pointed silence. “…Tell me what happened.” It was pretty obvious what had happened honestly, but Stiles wasn’t getting exactly why. They’d watched way worse movies before, at pack nights when group majority ruled out the rom-coms and they dug into action or gritty dark drama. Not to mention all the actual, real life blood and gore Derek had gone through without batting an eye. Yeah, Simba’s dad dying was traumatizing as hell from a Disney-level perspective but Derek was Derek. He’d pulled off a wraith’s head a few weeks ago without batting an eye.

It wasn’t adding up.

So when Derek let out a too long breath and murmured “Scar killed Mufasa” like that was an explanation Stiles bit his tongue, tried to work through it, and ended up saying “Did you… really not know that happened?” instead of something more comforting.

There was a longer pause, the sound of a body sliding south along plaster, and when Derek’s voice sounded again it was from about three feet lower.

“I did, he just… It doesn’t matter.”

“It matters.” Stiles knew that much, at least. Anything that made Derek react like this mattered. Derek huffed, like he didn’t believe it, but after a little while his voice sounded again.

“He was just… so smug about it. He planned it all out, killing his family for a little power. He was Simba’s uncle, he trusted him and––”

Derek broke off again, but this time Stiles didn’t need more. Pictured firmly established, and shit he was so stupid for not making that connection. He leaned his head against the edge of the doorframe, squeezing his eyes shut for a long second while hurt rolled over him.

“…You know that The Notebook’s Lydia’s favorite movie?” It was a hell of a non sequitur from the outside and Stiles bit his tongue, almost backed out again three times before going on. “But she’s never asked to watch it on pack movie nights. That’s ‘cause… a couple years back, when I was still trying to… you know, impress her, I agreed to watch it with her and… The end hit me like an Alpha fist to the face, dude. I did not see it coming and basically had a breakdown right there on her couch.” Derek’s breaths had gone quiet on the other side of the door, and Stiles took it as an encouragement. “…It was too much like my mom.”

A shift of movement and then silence. After a few slow breaths a gruff voice murmured: “…What did you do?”

Stiles snorted, rolling his head to aim a wry smirk at the closed door.

“Panicked. Made some excuse and bolted. We talked it out eventually but right then I just... I felt like such an idiot for letting some cheesy movie knock me down like that.”

“It’s nothing to be ashamed of.” Derek’s insight sounded, earnest, from behind a locked bathroom door. Stiles wondered if the irony even touched him. He didn’t comment, though, nudging at the door with his toe, and gave them both a few seconds before clearing his throat.

“So, we’ve got a few options here. We could talk it out, if you want.” He kind of doubted Derek would, with the wounds scraped raw like this. Already too vulnerable to open up more to the memories. “...That bathroom window doesn’t open, but I can close my eyes and pretend not to notice if you really want to sneak out and bolt into the night. Or we could go back downstairs, put something else on, finish our pizza and never mention it again.” He paused, wet his lips. “Or...”

He almost expected Derek to take the third option right there, or to have bolted away while Stiles was talking somehow, solid-shut window be damned, but instead he got a questioning hum. It was Stiles’ favorite option, and the riskiest, and he had to bolster himself for a second before managing, casually:

“Or we could watch the rest of the movie, see Simba grow up and kick Scar’s ass to avenge his family.”

Derek definitely could have bolted then. He had wolf magic, ok, and about half a decade of general creepy lurker skills going for him. There was a short pause instead, and then the knob clicking. The door swung open to find Derek sitting against the wall, hair disheveled and eyes raw red, and the urge to sink down and pull him against Stiles’ chest was startling.

Derek swallowed, jutted out a determined nod, and Stiles held out a hand for him. But if Derek leaned into Stiles’ side a little as they settled back on the couch, and if they both ended up getting teary at the end as Pride Rock restored to its former glory, Stiles wasn’t going to call them out on it.

Re Kate being a substitute teacher. There was the lacrosse game scene in 1.09 where Allison points out Jackson and Kate says "Holy hotness. Oh, if I was in high school again - Maybe just a substitute teacher." That's the only instance of it being mentioned afaik, so not 100% canon. But given it's Kate, I wouldn't put it past her if she indeed was a sub and that's how she got to Derek, esp after Paige and him being in such a vulnerable stage.

Oh thank you, anon! That does seem like a bit of a hint, and it also ties in with the Kate backstory given in the novel On Fire. I haven’t read the book, but just did some googling and found THIS review, which says that, in the book, Kate was posing as a substitute lifeguard at the school pool when she met him. (Which... off topic, but are “high school lifeguards” a real thing? Like... not a swim coach or a gym teacher, but a lifeguard? That seems super weird to me, but I’ll go with it.)

And, side note, this book sounds like it would be incredibly uncomfortable to read (even the description in the post was difficult, I had to skim through parts) but I’m also really impressed with the author for that because it should be uncomfortable. It should be creepy and upsetting. The show seriously played down the abusive and disturbing nature of Kate and everything she did to Derek, so props to Nancy Holder for absolutely not shying away from the details of the horrific person Kate was.

That said, the novel’s been at least partly retconned by “Visionary”, since it shows Derek as being more shy/awkward than he was in the flashbacks, and never having dated someone before Kate, but I do think that at the very least the way Kate’s portrayed there, at least from what’s shown in those excerpts, is completely accurate to the way she thinks and would have behaved.

Which is a little off topic from the ask, sorry!! But yeah, that comment in 1x09 does seem weirdly specific, saying “substitute teacher” instead of just “teacher.” It sounds like something you’d say if you were having a little inside joke with yourself. And she’s exactly the sort of predator who’d pose as a teacher to seduce a teen.

Have you ever thought of a Sterek Psych AU? Stiles running a fake psychic detective agency with a begrudging Scott, he thinks for a little while that he's in love with the cute new detective Lydia... only to realize later he's actually in love with her broody partner Derek who is too soft for his own good (additionally, the sheriff almost regrets teaching Stiles to be super observant sometimes, just because of all the trouble it causes)

I LOVE thinking about Sterek Psych AUs, anon!! This is something I would seriously read and write a million fics on. The dynamic there is so good, and Derek and Stiles’ snark and secretly adoring exasperation is so on point with Shawn and Lassie’s relationship.

I mean just...

Sterek.

Plus, outside the Sterek/Shassie of it all, I see so many of the characters fitting into the Psych world. Stiles with the retired cop dad, their relationship strained because John didn’t know how to interact with Stiles after losing his wife. Lassie starts the show with some extra emotional/trust issues because of his wife leaving him (which is nowhere near on par with Derek and his many evil exes issues, but there is a bit of parallel there). I can 100% see Stiles dragging a reluctant Scott into some wild freelance business venture, which Scott would go along with even though Scott already has a perfectly respectable job in the medical industry (vet/pharmaceuticals) and ends up footing most of their bills.

There’s just, there’s a lot.

I don’t see Lydia as Juliet at all though; I think she’s much more like Allison (or possibly Kira). Sweet and optimistic, tough in a pinch and a great cop but ultimately the emotional/moral core of the team. Lydia would be the no-nonsense chief, probably, and I know that messes things up a bit crush/relationship-wise, but I like the idea of Scott/Gus trying awkwardly to flirt with Allison, and Stiles being taken in initially by Chief Lydia, trying to impress her with his psychic abilities and feeling grateful for being hired on, but slowly realizing he’s way, way more interested in the grumpy detective he keeps bumping heads with on each case.

It’s such an awesome starting point for AU and there always need to be more cop!Derek fics out there.

Okay but just think of the dozens of Sterek fics that will come from that small scene of Stiles saying blindness is his biggest fear and Derek questioning him. I can just imagine one with Derek hearing Stiles heartbeat stutter and later confronting him about it and Stiles being all like 'of course it's not my biggest fear, don't you know me at all? My biggest fear is losing you again, watching you bleed out and not being able to do anything about it, not being able to save you.'

Derek’s eyes linger after Stiles looks away, his body shifting restless, fingers clenching and loosing in a twitch across the exam table. The lie hangs bright and obvious in the air –– less in the absent hitch of heartbeat or the burn of nerves that don’t taste quite like embarrassment or like fear. Derek could explain those things away in context if he tried, but he can’t explain the way the words fail to line up with everything he knows he knows about Stiles.

“Becoming blind?”

“Yeah... terrified of it. Always have been.”

He wonders if it’s as obvious to Scott as it is to him, but the rest of the group’s already moved on, not missing a beat, focus shifted back to the problem at hand while Stiles re-centers. His pulse sharpens again and his eyes lift back to Derek, flicking up and away before moving back to Scott again, sliding seamless back into the conversation.

Derek shakes off the strangeness, and follows him.

“Why did you lie in there?”

Stiles’ step falters on the question, and the resigned set of his shoulders tell Derek he’d been expecting this and hoping every bit as much to avoid it. Derek almost wants to take it back, tell Stiles is doesn’t matter, let whatever horror lives in the darkest place of Stiles’ heart lie there undisturbed... but this is too important.

He crosses his arms, keeping his tone and stance indifferent like that might make this conversation any easier.

“We need to know what’s coming, Stiles. When these things manifest, it’s not just going to be your fear anymore. It could threaten everyone.”

He’s not expecting the laugh that punches out of Stiles, harsh and thin and edged bitter enough to make Derek’s unaffected stance falter.

“Don’t you think I know that?”

Dark masks and fireflies float through Derek’s mind. A too-pale stranger with Stiles’ face and cold, ancient eyes. A huge lizard with paralyzing claws, and too-wet breaths as water threatened to pull them downward. A misshapen wolf with crimson eyes and spittle-laced breath, and an image of ghostly horsemen Derek had never seen, only heard of in Peter’s stories.

Derek could stab guesses at Stiles’ worst fears, could conjure up possibilities in Stiles’ quaking hands and nervous eyes as they darted out to the empty parking lot, looking for an escape before moving reluctant back to Derek. But he couldn’t know, and he needed to know, especially if it was something that could hurt the group.

...Especially if there was a way he could help Stiles prepare for it.

When it comes, he’s the one who’s unprepared.

“I can’t lose you again,” punches out rough and shaken, stunning Derek into stillness. Salt stings the air as tears well, and Stiles looks away on a wet breath, hand raking into his hair and tugging. “You were... dying and I walked away. I had to, there was nothing I could–– And then you were just gone afterward and I knew you were fine, I knew it was better that way but... fuck, Derek. It felt like you’d died some days.”

The tear tracks down and Derek feels his head shaking, arms falling from their faux-casual cross. The words are ringing through his mind, rattling around in a way that makes no sense and makes too much sense, echoes something too raw and honest inside him and he steps forward, “Stiles...” falling out soft, but Stiles is rocking a step back, shaking his head and swiping rough at the tear. Derek lets him retreat.

“My mom died in front of me.” This confession falls out soft, and Stiles’ shoulders shrink in against the sting of them. He looks small again, sixteen or years younger, and it takes an effort not to move in and shelter him from the sting of his own words. “And I just... I couldn’t do anything. Couldn’t save her. Do you know how that––” He cuts off, because he knows Derek knows. Derek understands that feeling better than anyone. It’s a bond Derek’s always wished they didn’t share.

Stiles shakes his head, blinking quick.

“Fuck, I can’t go through that again, ok? If these things are bringing our worst fears to life then I’m better off away from it, for everyone’s sake. What if it kills you because of me, because–– I can’t watch someone else I love die.”

The words hang. Stiles has gone strangely still suddenly. In the clinic, some young pup sets up howling.

“...You love?” Because Stiles had been talking about his mother, but he’d also been talking about Derek. About losing loved ones, and that...

Stiles’ breath hisses out, body tensing up defensive and challenging. His hands ball up, shoulders setting broad again, and it feels like every argument they’ve ever had when Stiles meets his eyes, daring him to doubt the revelations he’d just laid out.

Derek had learned a long time ago not to doubt Stiles.

“Don’t be an idiot,” he says, like it’s obvious. Like it’s some undeniable fact that Stiles loves him, fears losing him, that in all the nightmares of Stiles’ life, losing Derek could rest in anywhere near the same category as possession or dementia, or his mother’s death. But Stiles has always been afraid of losing people he loved, of not being able to save them... and Derek is one of those people. 

Derek is the person Stiles couldn’t look at while thinking about loss.

He moves forward a step, and Stiles doesn’t retreat this time, amber eyes locked with an expression that’s caught somewhere between challenge and pleading.

It’s one of the most terrifying moments of Derek’s life as he lifts his hand to Stiles’ cheek, and the most natural thing in the world once it’s resting there.

“I’ve died before,” he reminds Stiles, softly. “That’s not about to beat me. I’ll always come back... for you.”

“For me?” Stiles sounds breathless, doubt and hope warring as Derek’s thumb brushes over his tear-streaked cheek.

Derek tilts his head, warmth touching his eyes.

“Don’t be an idiot.”

When Stiles grins and presses their lips together, Derek forgets what it’s like to be afraid.

hihi, in that post you just wrote you mentioned that Derek has a more personal stake in what's going on throughout the series than Scott does. Can you expand on that or was it just a hyperbole?

Hey there,

Oh, not at all. I don’t mean to say that Scott has no stake in what goes on, or that this is true in every instance. But overall, I think you could definitely make a case that, while Scott is the protagonist, Derek is the more central character to most of the conflicts. This is probably most apparent in seasons one and 3A, and I’d argue also four, and I’ll just run through them all roughly here.

Just a reminder that I haven’t actually watched most of the show in years so I apologize for any details I miss or get wrong. And yeah, I do focus more on Derek as a rule so maybe I’m forgetting some huge contributions by Scott; if so, please feel free to jump in and correct me. That said, I’m really not going to list out every detail from every season, just run roughly through the overall arcs and the way the characters impact them and vice versa. Obviously this just covers seasons 1-4, where Derek was a regular character. And ok, that’s enough disclaiming. Diving in:

Season one

While arguably the show starts with Scott being bitten, what really sets everything into motion is the murder of Derek’s sister. Laura’s death, the thing Derek needs to solve and avenge, is the launching point that pushes all the other show’s conflicts into motion. And while the show puts most of its focus on Scott and his personal dramas (whether the pretty new girl will like him, whether he’ll do well in lacrosse) most of the actual conflict is driven by Derek. He’s the one determined to figure out who the Alpha is (and who, it turns out, has a personal connection to him), he’s the one with a history and continuing conflict with the Argents, which turns out to be the whole motivation behind the Alpha’s actions. Scott’s conflicts are relatively small things: will he make co-captain? Will his bowling date go well? While Derek brings in most of the major conflicts: shot by Kate leading to revelations about the Argents, captured by Kate… Eventually, he (with Stiles’ help) is the one who discovers who the Alpha is and confronts him, and later he’s the one who kills him.

Despite Scott being the protagonist, this season is really a story about the Hales vs the Argents, Derek and Peter dealing with their trauma, and Derek avenging his sister.

Season two

This one is less Derek-centric, since the main villain/conflict for most of the season (Matt) has nothing to do with either him or Scott. However, most of Scott’s actions throughout the season are reactionary to Derek –– while Derek recruits betas and builds a pack, Scott shows up to try and convince the betas how terrible Derek is. Derek makes plans to try and stop the kanima, and Scott works to thwart him. When Derek rescues Scott and it leads to the death of Allison’s mother, Scott sends Allison after Derek. And while Scott is the apparent “hero” of the season, since his “master plan” is what ultimately defeats Gerard, he does so by using –– yep, guessed it –– Derek.

On another note: the entire kanima arc (really, the entire thing that set the season in motion) was a direct result of Derek’s actions. Derek bit Jackson at the end of season one, which turned him into the kanima, which allowed Matt and later Gerard to use him to their own ends. While Derek doesn’t realize this at the start of the season, he does have a much more personal stake in what’s going on than Scott does. His killing of Peter is also the driving force behind Lydia’s arc, and he’s the target used to resurrect him later on, so while the “master plan” is Scott’s… most of the major plot elements are set in motion or resolved in one way or another by Derek.

3A

Here’s a rough summary of the season: two of Derek’s betas are captured and he works to find them and save them. Derek’s long lost, thought-dead sister is rediscovered. Their captors are a group of Alphas who spend most of the season terrorizing the pack and killing two of Derek’s betas to try and recruit Derek to their side. Meanwhile, Derek strikes up a romance with a new teacher who turns out to be one of the season’s main villains, a dark druid who had been manipulating him for protection. Derek’s sister is hospitalized and he ends up having to give up his Alpha power to save her. One entire episode is focused on exploring Derek’s backstory and another tragedy in his life, which notably led to the awakening of the Nemeton and set everything happening this season into motion. …At the last minute, it turns out that Scott is actually a “True Alpha” and the Alpha pack had been after Scott all along (despite actively pursuing Derek to the point of kidnapping and murdering members of his pack). I’ll let you decide who the driving force of the season was.

3B

This season is definitely the weakest in terms of focusing on Derek, though notably it also had the least focus on Scott. Stiles (and the Nogitsune) was undeniably front and center and behind most of the action, with the rest of the characters scrambling to react to him.

Season four

The driving conflict at the start of season four is the kidnapping of Derek Hale. The first two episodes are almost entirely focused on this, with them first saving him from Kate and second dealing with the aftermath of that –– figuring out how to deal with de-aged Derek and Kate’s plans for him.

The Benefactor arc affects both characters equally at first as they (along with the other supernaturals) are being targeted, but spins back to focus on Derek when a bit of computer coding suggests that Derek is destined to die soon. Derek and Scott each have their individual arcs as well, with Derek slowly losing his powers and Scott trying to train newbie wolf Liam. However, the Liam arc isn’t particularly intrinsic to the story (it could be removed without the overall plot being affected) and, while Derek’s loss of powers is ultimately the same (it apparently has to do with his evolution… somehow. Don’t ask me. It still makes no real sense) it’s played as being part of some master plan by Kate. It’s the reason Derek hires Braeden, to find out where Kate is and what her plans are, and it’s repeatedly suggested to be part of the villain arc until the finale reveals it not to be. Therefore… again, while Scott and his beta troubles and his lacrosse games and his love life have the majority of the screentime and focus, these are all ultimately details. Minor plot points. Just like in season one, Derek’s story is more connected to the villain’s story and the overall arc of the season.

I also think it’s notable that Scott’s attempts to win over Liam are basically just Scott parroting Derek’s dialogue from season one. So a driving force behind all of Scott’s interactions with Liam is… again, Derek. (This isn’t even really shown as character growth –– Scott never goes to Derek to commiserate over new betas or apologize for his early behavior, recognizing how hard it must have been for Derek. It’s played for laughs and then Liam ends up idolizing Scott anyway…. this isn’t really on topic but it’s just frustrating.)

Now, I don’t want to ignore the second villain arc in this season –– Peter, and his attempt to steal Scott’s powers. And as I said at the start, I don’t mean to say that Scott was not important to the plot in any season. He was the main character and, yeah, he did stuff. In most seasons, he was the one who struck the final blow and saved the day. But, as far as I recall, Peter’s plan to kill Scott only became a major plot element in the final two episodes (and that whole plan… and Peter’s motivations were muddled to all hell). The major villain of s4 –– the one whose arc carried over, who started and ended the season –– wasn’t Peter, wasn’t even the Benefactor. It was Kate. The driving question was what is Kate up to? The person who was wronged at the start of s4 was Derek, and the one who overcame that and emerged triumphant was Derek. In a very real way, the season was about Derek overcoming his traumas caused by Kate, with the story taking us through him being young and naive and manipulated by her, to the trauma of that aftermath (shown here by physical weakness and inability to fight back), to his evolution and her defeat, with him standing over her, triumphant. Scott doesn’t have anywhere near that strong and coherent an arc in s4.

God, this was not brief at all. But yeah, I’d definitely argue that, for most of the seasons Derek was in, he was more deeply entrenched in the narratives and in pushing the story forward than Scott was. Scott may have been the POV character but very often he was just pulled along by the plot or focused on more trivial matters. Derek was the core character and the driving force in much more of the major, relevant action.

Do u ever ugly sob when you remember how Derek's anchor is Stiles being kind to him?

This is everything to me. The way Stiles acted in that dream scene, so gentle and understanding and soft, says just so much about Derek and what he wants, and what he pictures Stiles as.

Stiles is his safety.

And just... it’s honestly the most beautiful thing. This is someone who took refuge in anger for so long, who tried to take on the world himself because he couldn’t trust anyone, anything, anymore. Who tried to dictate everything, couldn’t explain himself because opening up was weakness and betrayal lived around every corner. Who couldn’t believe in anything except his own strength and the fact that the world would probably take the next opportunity to screw him over.

And then there was Stiles. Being there for Derek, time and again. Even if he was snarking the whole time–– hell, especially if he was snarking the whole time, because that just meant Stiles honestly didn’t want to be driving around a wounded Derek or doing research for him or treading water, holding him up while a giant lizard stalked around them... but he did it anyway because Derek needed him to. Because Stiles would always be there for him. Because Stiles understood him. And how could Derek see all that, experience all that, time after time and not let his walls slip down?

Stiles worked his way into Derek’s heart despite Derek’s best intentions, and seeing that progression of trust, seeing Derek soften to Stiles, bit by bit, seeing in the dream scene everything Derek wished for and believed Stiles to be, and the complete, vulnerable trust Derek had in Stiles at that point...

This is why Sterek is eternal.
