"I was a girl who hates yucky things before I even had internets" okay
I guess this is regarding my last post about being anti pro/darkship in 6th grade (first radnormal post yay!), so let me tell the story bc I don't think I've ever shared it.
I used to really love MHA, and so I often went on fandom.com for the MHA and Shipping wikis (and whenever I get into a fandom, I GET INTO IT. And this was the first big fandom I've ever joined, mind you) The problem with this show is that the majority of the characters were minors.
I knew what the fandom was like. I knew they were toxic and I wanted to not be part of the crowd. I remember learning how everyone has different opinions on ships and that I should respect them, and I did have a lot of friendly discussions, and I really learned how to tolerate other's opinions when it did not affect me.
But when I saw certain ships (mainly minor x adult or incestuous) I KNEW it was wrong. I saw some discourse in comments about respecting certain ships and I agreed with the side that said certain ships are NEVER okay to support. And I haven't changed the viewpoint since.
It's not that these ships bother me, it's that these ships are MORALLY WRONG. Any relationship that depends on huge imbalances of power is wrong. Any relationship where one of them can get groomed is wrong. Any relationship in which they are closely related is wrong.
I understand that those things do happen in real life and maybe a lot of pro/darkshippers are using these ships as a coping mechanism, but it is definitely NOT a good one. By supporting these ships, you are normalizing them, but they are NOT normal. It should NEVER be romanticized for fetishized; it should be delt with in a mature manner, treating it as the horrible relationship it is. Because fiction MOST DEFINITLY affects reality and anyone who doesn't think so is an idiot.
