He made a noise in his throat that wasn't quite a scoff, not quite a laugh. His smile went placid though it never really met his eyes.

"Sometimes," Wade admitted. "Could get away with more shit. Things were simpler. Easier to get by. Yeah, reckon I miss it a bit." He looked across the table at Jane. Now it was his turn to ask a question.

"Why?"

     “Long enough,” he drawled. Slowly, he unfolded his arms, slipping his hands into his jeans pockets, thumbs hooked in the belt loops. He shifted in the doorway, shoulder pressed to the frame, unable to cross the threshold just yet but playing off the inability as casual indifference. “You ain’t very vigilant, huh?”

     Wade smiled widely and easily. “Now, don’t worry; I’m just appreciatin’ the view’s all. I’ll be on my way.”

Oh shit. He had, hadn't he? Completely unintentionally, but he had.

"Damn," he muttered, pausing to consider his options before deciding why the hell not? Wade didn't have a lot going for him tonight anyway. He could pretend to be the hero this once.

He rounded on the small girl, stuffed his hands in his coat pockets, and flashed a smile. "Most folks say 'thank you'."

He said it like that, deliberately, just like he'd said her name, with a lazy drawl, his tone layered with honey and warmth. Wade leaned in, lips close to the shell of her ear, to say it again, like that,

"Kaylee."

Wade scoffed, then redirected his gaze to the Zippo in his hand. He opened the top, snapped it shut. Open, shut, open, shut, open. Wade closed the lighter with a final, loud snap, and palmed it. His eyes stayed down for several more beats before he looked back up at Thomas.

"Nah, you can hate me, darlin'. You just don't wanna." He gave a tight smile. "Or can't." Then he sat up and leaned forward, jabbing a finger in Thomas's direction. "You think the worst thing is admittin' you have an emotion once in a goddamn while." Wade laughed, darkly. "Everythin's the worst part with you. It's lost all damn meanin'."

For a few seconds, Wade just stared at her blankly. Then he rolled his blue eyes, corner of his mouth quirking up into a faint smirk. Making money? Well, if poker winnings and stealing from his victims was making money, then Wade couldn't very well disagree.

He pulled out his wallet, took out a crisp $100 bill and tossed it onto the table. It was easier to play along rather than argue with Kaylee about it. If the cost of keeping peace was one ill-gotten C-note, that was a small price to pay.

"There ya go, darlin'. I'm contributin'."

He missed the warmth of her already, but Wade made no move to sit up with her. Instead, he rolled to his side, a tiny smirk playing on his lips and a chuckle in his voice.

"Don't tell me you're havin' regrets. Wouldn't've thought you had those."

He looked up from the slip of paper he'd been focused on. Some bill of sale or a receipt, something that meant absolutely nothing to him and wasn't even the slightest bit interesting now. Wade wadded it up and tossed it aside, cutting his eyes to Vera.

"Dungeon?" he echoed, sounding both intrigued and skeptical—though intrigue won out. Wade started to chuckle. "What kind of dungeon? Torture? Sex? Both?"
