"Oh," Jane said, before she went speechless. She just stood there helplessly floundering; fingers fidgeting, mouth opening and closing. Now she didn't know what to do. She felt as stung by Dylan's attitude just as much as she felt so silly for getting upset in the first place. Why was she such a baby?

Jane hesitated a moment more. Then, finally, she grabbed a book. She settled down on the floor with her back against the couch, nice and close to Dylan without touching.

Jane didn't open the book just yet, though. She bit her lip, watching Dylan, before she gulped. Then finally she opened the book and started reading quietly to herself.

Silence filled the room, save for the occasional page turning. It was a familiar noise... comforting. It made him think of quiet evenings long ago. Memories came back to him from the oddest things—an innocuous sound, a smell, taste. Dylan was transported back to another time, when he had another name, another sort of company—

He pulled himself out of it and scrubbed a hand over his face. His groan rudely broke the quiet.

"I am not havin' a good day. One cuppa tea ain't gonna do it. Maybe not even a dozen cups."

"Forgive me," he nodded, "I don't want to be like the shits you usually deal with." An involuntary huff left his lips. He got that enough with his family. "You sound tired..."

For a few beats, Chrissy just stared at him as she tried to decide if he was lying. Then she sighed heavily.

"Yeah. I feel tired. It's been a long day."
