Unchained Melody - Glee Cast
If J.C. felt like a fish out of water at prom, it was almost nothing compared to how lost Aspen looked. He didn’t know how she’d gotten roped into chaperoning something with so many noisy, teenage strangers, but he suspected that probably someone had asked and she’d been too shy to actually tell them no. Either way, he tried to offer her a smile from across the room, where he was camped out near the punch, guarding it to make sure none of the teens or problematic chaperones, even, spiked it. He’d learned in bio class what alcohol could do to brains that weren’t fully developed, after all.
J.C. hadn’t left his post all night, and a glance at his watch told him that prom was coming to a close. Nobody had gotten into a fight when they had announced prom queen; no one was drunk because of contaminated punch, and he had a feeling the people who organized the event would call it a success... but he wasn’t sure he’d call it a success for himself. He’d volunteered to feel useful, to help make people happy, and maybe to come out of his shell a little, and as the opening strains of Unchained Melody came on, the last slow song of the night according to the voice through the microphone, he realized he’d done none of those things.
And he also hadn’t seen Aspen smile all night.
Not that he’d been watching her or anything. He’d just happened to catch sight of her a few times here and there, and at this moment she was over by the empty tables, where no one was sitting any longer thanks to the realization that their prom was coming to a close. Time that had seemed like it was passing slowly was now slipping away, and J.C. usually didn’t have the courage to do this kind of thing, but... Well, he found himself on his feet and headed over to her anyway.
“May I have this dance?” he asked, too nervous to even try to pull flowers out of his sleeve to hand to her or anything like that. Prom wasn’t about them, but there was no reason that the chaperones couldn’t have at least one nice dance. “You look too beautiful to be over here all sad and alone the whole night,” he added awkwardly, about to retreat and decide this had been a bad idea when she nodded her head and took his outstretched hand instead.
