Anything more than a light dusting shuts down the city. There will be a day in which climate change will have progressed far enough that a 'mild' winter will no longer exist and I am reasonably sure that I will perish under mounds of snow when it comes. It wasn’t the speed at which things moved that dug down into a soft, raw place in his gut and rooted there: a constant, unpleasant tug, like a sharp pebble in your boot. It was the noise. Steve had grown up in Brooklyn, which is a place not known for its peace and quiet. Everything was louder and the sounds were clearer and more realistic. Sometimes unrealistically more than real. He mentioned it to Natasha once. She said, “Well, that sucks.” Shrugged. Said she had to go and he didn’t ask if it she was going to a movie or South America or Asia. He didn’t ask how long she’d be gone.
Weeks later he found a pair of noise-cancelling headphones plugged into the stereo in his living room. No note. No box, but they were brand new. They were snug over his ears, but not bad.
