hey i dont think its naive to want to become a teacher to make things better. you may not fix the system but you can still help your students and try to talk to people inside your school about how to make positive changes. im not sure how to end this message but i hope things are okay and you do whats best in life for you :)

Context: Math/Education Allegory

Anon, I really appreciate you and your message. It gives me power and hope, although not quite in a way you were hoping(?) Then again, I can't know how you were hoping things would pan out so.... //shrugs

I've only been teaching math for two years (well, technically two and a half, with that Half being as a sub during COVID), and for both years I've gotten the low-achievement students. Folks who can barely add two digit numbers in middle school. Some are SPED, some have language barriers that affect their achievement, but some of them are just "not math people" (quotes bc growth mindset, anyone can be "a math person").

They've been "taught" the boring ways of math, aka memorization without actual understanding of the concepts behind why certain things work, and at a certain point (middle school, usually) that rote memorization just isn't enough due to the conceptual understanding that is required for the higher maths that are taught in secondary school.

Obviously, studies say and experts say that current system is bad, that we need change, but it's going to be so much time until we actually get to that point - my AP calc teacher was Cool(tm) for tying in COOKING into our math class and having us actually make the cake/whatever from recipes...

Unfortunately, the higher ups decided stuff and we have to go along with it - at our school, specifically, they decided that *everyone* needs to take Algebra in 8th grade.

Now anyone with even a sliver of psychology/child development knowledge can tell you that children go through development.... at different times..... in the same way not all babies learn to stand up at the same age, children's brains do not develop at the same rate.

That's why younger children start with "physical" math - counting, for example. That's why subtraction is shown as "take away" or "I ate the apples" or whatever it may be. Children literally do not develop the capability of conceptual understanding of certain things until later, which is why babies believe people can literally disappear when doing peek-a-boo, or how young toddlers/children can't see from someone else's perspective.

My school, by doing this "algebra in 8th grade" initiative, is setting up these kids to fail; yes, some are at the place where they are developmentally appropriate and are able to grasp the conceptual things. But some children, at this age, physically are not capable.

This is just one very specific example of how the education system only serves a few at best, and is setting up children to fail at worst.

Cookie-cutter method may work for some things, but education is not one of them.

Tho tbh I enjoy most of the fluffy fanfics I read that may or may not be far from canon, and while I’m not surprised they ended up being Flushed [Matesprits], I kinda wished they were still the cute like, I guess a QPR type thing that they had going. [disclaimer - I honestly don’t remember the hamstek that much, the feelings that I get from this ship may just be completely from fics lmao]

Dear Person I Hate,

Hi. I haven’t talked to you, or even about you in a while. You probably think I’ve forgotten you, or better yet, you’ve probably forgotten about me. It’s been literal years, but I’m still not over what you did to me. The impact you made in my life. I joke about trust issues but you’re a large part of why I have trust issues as bad as they are. I joke a lot about my depression but you’re a large part of why I was as bad as I was. And it’s great that you’re out of my life completely now, because I am better now than I’ve been in a while, especially when compared to the days when you were in my life. I can be myself without hiding who I am, without getting misgendered. I don’t have to try to fit this weird mold that you had for me. We had good moments, that’s true, but none are enough to outweigh the grave mistakes that we both made. 

I’m glad that you didn’t follow your plan and end up at the same school as me, because I have to stop and compose myself every time I see someone with a similar height, similar build, and similar characteristics. Even if I’m in a different state, I do a double take, because I need to know it’s not you, back to hurt me again. I can’t even go to some of my favorite places or events by myself, because I know you’ll be there. You probably don’t care, and that’s great, but because of you, I’m always on edge when I’m out in public, especially alone.

I really hope that I never see you again. And thank you for showing me the signs to watch out for in my future relationships.

Dear future me?

Dear Future Me,

Great job on somehow making it through all the shit you’re in right now. Interpersonal relationships are just super difficult sometimes, and there’s a lot of miscommunication, misunderstanding, and just overall sadness and frustration everywhere. I’m sure you’ve learnt a lot, and it’d be great if you could just time travel and teach me those things but I know you can’t and that I have to learn by myself. 

I honestly don’t think my family’s going to be changing their stances on HRT any time soon, so I’m probably losing family once I can start hormones. Which means that I’ll only have my friends and music.

So really, the only thing that I hope hasn’t changed in the future is my passion for music, and I really really hope that my current friends that I feel connected to stay that way, however long into the future. I really hope that that’s the case. I don’t know how I’d handle it if I had a fallout with these guys.

I’m keeping it short and sweet. Thanks for being there for me-- by existing, you show that I can make it through this.
