i learned a new sign today

there's not enough art of meulin signing anything but cat, i love you, or omg seriously its a fun language have fun with it

Uh, nothing really in particular! I really just want to learn a few simple things like; yes, no, please, thankyou, why the hell are the lines for the ladies bathrooms so long at cons?? Etc. Sadly the only two signs I know are for turtle and chicken T.T I would look online but there are so many different types of sign language!!

Well, im just going to assume you're an American, or at least will be in America, cause that's what ASL is. If you're not, i suggest looking in the different sign language tags on tumblr to find someone who speaks those.

also, im only in year two of my ASL course, so if any of my followers sign, can you read this over and correct or add anything,,,

ASL is a hard language to learn and takes years of learning and practice so this is my little crash-course in it.

i couldn't decide where to put this link but it's kinda helpful okay really helpful so give it a look as well

For general vocabulary, the dictionary I like to use is here.

I really, really, really suggest memorizing the alphabet. It's really slow and makes you look like a total beginner (which you are, so it's really not that bad) but can help you get what you want. 

Okay, so, back to glossing things. Glossing is writing things how they should be signed. 

There's several kinds of ASL (english word order and pse and asl are all types) 

English word order is probably what you will use for anything i dont teach here, since it's very simple and all you need to do is look up the words and sign them in the order you'd say them in english.

otherwise the stuff im putting here is what i understand as topic-comment order, or rhetoricals or anything else. 

for general things, like yes/no/thank you, those can just be signed on their own, but it's really informal for you to use one-word answers. But hey, for basics it's fine.

This is a sort of kinda advanced asl thing but it's really helpful and it's called classifiers. If you learn the basic ones (CL: 1, CL: 3, CL: 4, etc.) then you can tell stories and describe things with hardly saying anything.

for example, to sign 'the line for the bathroom is so long' or something like that, you could say

CL: 4 "long line of people" WANT BATHROOM WOWlike i said its a little confusing but reading that page would probably help a bit.

for me, you point to yourself, things with a hashtag mean you fingerspell them. For her, you just point to meulin, girlfriend, you sign GIRL and then FRIEND, it's pretty simple.

When you use a sign that is made up or people might not know, you should fingerspell it first
