Save the world!!! Motto of each individual, shouldn’t it be? For the sake of our children ( if you want to have Cranky kids in the future!). Sustainability is the new hip and hap of every town and country today and it is because the amount of waste produced by the fashion industry and the dump in the rivers are very much known to all and it is scary.
Us “New Age” fashion designers are thus taught a way to TRY and reduce this waste and dump and the technique is known as, guess the name if you can!, ZERO Waste! (Obvious right?)
We were told to get a piece of fabric (however long or broad) but the cache there was that we CAN’T throw away even the Selvedge bit of the fabric. In short and sweet word, use EVERYTHING.
The complication in life starts at the start and by the time you are done you’ll feel you already saved the world till an extent. Though, it is interesting and the idea is to make a garment without any sketch or patterns. It starts with a flat fabric laid out on the floor just like this:
It took me about an hour to come up with an idea and till the end I wasn’t very sure how it would turn out. Though after adding the gathers and a few pleats for the skirt, i realized that a crop top is too done and so i changed it into a draped pleated top.
This is when I also felt that a different fabric colour could have done justice to the combination instead of both the top and bottoms being the same print as i mentioned even in my class when asked what is that one thing, given a chance, I would change in my garment. though the most interesting part of the garment for me was the one piece sleeve made from the same fabric piece as the front.
The edge within the sleeve was achieved when I cut off a piece from it as I was running out of fabric and had none left for my waste band. I would say this isn’t the best of my works, but i wouldn’t mind making one more 0-waste garment just to feel the satisfaction of doing something good for the world.
