When you can't find a good reference for a pose, so you have to do it yourself (Anyone telling you that 'using references is cheating', is just wanting to see you SUFFER). Btw, I don't always need a pose reference, but you can see by the thumbnail I was not nailing what I was going for. Speaking of references, I see using them as a way to get the pose more believable, not to do a one-to-one recreation of it. In this case I did a semi draw-over to get the shapes in the right spots, and then adjusted accordingly.
And yes, I have a real crochet hook I used as a prop (I can't really crochet very well beyond a basic chain stitch, but I have a bunch of hooks on hand).
