DAD WAS HOME!
Dad was home without any real reason to be home, too! Those were some of the best times: when there wasn’t any holiday to worry about or birthday to be excited for. It was just dad time.
Even better?
It was dad time for a whole week.
Some sort of construction was going down at the frontier or something. Barry didn’t really ask, but he was sure mom did. They could talk about the technicalities and the boring work stuff all they wanted, but he wasn’t about to worry about it! There was no time to waste!!
But, of course, since it was his first day back, Barry wasn’t going to force his old man into any real strenuous father-son activity either. Even if the island was still technically a part of the region, Palmer still had to travel Sinnoh’s length to get home. He was always a little tired from the flight, even if he tried not to show it. Dad liked to pretend that he was a lot younger than he was, but Barry caught on pretty fast. Ever since he crashed trying to do that wheelie, things would never be the same….
Watching a movie was good enough for him for the time being, plopped next to Palmer with a giant bowl of popcorn. Mary excused herself into their room for some light reading, presumably just to ignore whatever popcorn based mess was bound to happen between the two of them for the night. She could vacuum in the morning.
There were very few occasions where Barry would voluntarily give up control of movie picking, but dad was worth the hour and a half of…well…whatever he picked. They had similar enough tastes that he could probably make it through.
About halfway through the flick, Barry’s will was wearing thin. He’d given up and keeping upright, instead leaning against Palmer, eyes half closed. It wasn’t that the movie was boring, really, but dad had gotten home so late and by the time dinner was done it was even later and why couldn’t he ever stay up late!?
Palmer, of course, noticed his poor boy slipping. He didn’t mean to come in so late, but getting out of the office before the official shutdown was nearly impossible. It would have cut two extra days out of his family time, and he wasn’t about to have that.
He was dragged out of his thoughts by Barry’s head suddenly jerking back against his sleeve, successfully holding off the sandman for at least another three minutes. Poor kid was that stubborn…
The man wrapped an arm around his son, pulling him closer and securing his position against his shoulder just in case he were to nod off. At least now he wouldn’t go tipping forward and busting his head of the coffee table.
There’s a soft snore from his left.
“Well that didn’t take long.”
