norma's not a bartender, though she's felt like one often enough: it's paramount that she handle people and their stories with grace. it's unprecedented, however --- on the job, at least --- that anyone express an interest in hers. she's certainly never been paid to eat her own gooseberry pie, much less by another woman.

the narrows. 

to his right, postal-working know-it-all cliff. to his left, accountant barfly norm. although it might have been jarring to see him sitting with those loyal regulars, his once-tolerated presence had turned into acceptance. better he in here than out there, was the usual refrain, especially with it turning colder. 

he kept up with the wisecracks, told a few of his own, his tone flat and scathing, which made them laugh. he had become something of a strangely youthful (in appearance only) middle aged man, the sorely needed third addition to a now-trio, and, perhaps, that was the most proper way of describing a strange young man (a strange kid) who’d chosen a sports bar as a place to hunker down, as opposed to some street corner. 

here, at least, he had warmth, and food and drink on the house. there were certainly worse places. long as they didn’t kick him out, or hurt him, or any of the alarming scenarios he always had to remind himself about and go through, this is where he’d go.

nearly in tandem, they look at the publicly frazzled diane. her mantra allowed for the formation of a dip between mutt’s brows. he flicks an eyes-only look at the man on his right, then his left. at the same time, they all say, “ what? “ in differing manners. diane has found herself on the business end of a cerberus, and only the littlest head elaborated. “ you good? “
