Assignment 3 Progress Update
I see I have forgotten to make a progress update about assignment 3. So here it is, but a little late :) I'll write about some of the new things I learnt during the project and some struggles I stumbled upon.
While watching some online tutorials I learnt that it's possible to make folders for the events. Making the code look ALOT cleaner and easier to manage. For some reason the folders are hidden in "(right-click an event) -> add... -> event group". I think I would make something as useful as this more accessible.
I couldn't find a good way to make chat bubbles or handle UI popups, so I made it like the video above instead. When approaching a specified area, the chat bubble will appear at the bottom of the screen. When you move away, it will disappear. I think this was an okay solution.
Struggles
I had some trouble finding a good way to save global variables to a file, and then load them on startup. I found some video tutorials on the subject, but they didn't work for me. When the game is closed and reopened, all the stats are unfortunately reset back to default values. However, there should only be two lines of code necessary to fix this. One to save the values to file, and one to read them.
Another problem I had is that the ammo in the guns are always set to "1" when starting a new scene. I tried to update them using some events, but nothing worked. So the solution now is that I force a reload whenever entering a new scene. It's not perfect, but it works better than having players fire 1 bullet and having to reload.
Next up
Now we're already in the middle of the playtesting phase. Only a few more playtests and we're good to go. I'll make another update when all the playtesting is finished :))

Research 3.5: Basic elements comic books (Part I)
The parameter for the analysis of the storylines in this graphic novel is based on a book, see the entre for this book here.
Independen Learning 0.5: Writting a story.
El jugador de ajedrez
This is one of my favourite graphic novels last year, the artwork is just incredible. I love it but the story is also a masterpiece. The original novel has the same storyline and ending
The story
This story is mostly character-driven; some events indeed happen to the main character, but this is not the focus of the story. The story structure architect book does not consider the conflict that is in this story, Schmidt talked about inner conflict like being unsure of something but this is deep into trauma, it is a look into a distorted mind and how a person dealt with a traumatizing event.
This particular conflict is so well described that a very steady story, with no much action, but because of that it is interesting and powerful than makes you read it again and again.
A contract with God by Will Eisner
This book has more than one story, but I am going to concentrate on the main one. Schmidt, 2005 talk about the storyline situation in this case as a problem but the main character is unable to solve the problem and die.
A different from other stories with similar ideas, he can show pain. I have not seen that often. Frame by frame you can see how he evolved into the character in the second act. Making the end (surprising) but not unexpected.
A life force by Will Eisner
I did not want to choose another Eisner story, but I think I found a theme among the stories that I like. I love, like anyone else a happy ending stories but these are not the stories I remember or make an impact on. It seems that I feel more inclined to open endings or tragedies, and not always happy endings.
To understand this story, I was looking into antiheroes. They are the main character in the story but lacking all the characteristic of the hero. The character started to question his existence and the idea. The small events that happen to him and his struggles to cope, lead to an unfulfilling ending.
As the story happens, it seems the main character has gained courage and started to change but when the obstacles happen in his life. he moves back to his own life. It gives you the feeling that he did not want to change.
The last bit, it is the interesting part of history inserted in the story (clips of information, title of news and other resources to give the reader a background of what is happening at the moment the story is on) I research a few of them to see if they were fictional or real. They were real but the summary was a bit later, I guess to make it easier to read.
The storyline was a bit flat, nothing much happens but it is interesting to see the evolution of the character and his final decisions.
Summary
All these stories have an everyday person dealing with traumatizing events from torture to losing a child. These main characters are not heroes and they fail, sometimes to overcome adversity. You can feel a deep sadness in Eisner character or condition in Zweig book.
Both authors choose to let the character fails to let the reader with a heavy heart, but the endings are congruent with the story, they feel natural and not abrupt.
