Re-do Exercise 4.6: Paper circus

Ideas and research behain

I was going to redo this exercise because I did not have paper to do it at home (covid) and I did not want to buy on Amazon. Unfortunately, I did not explain myself properly and my tutor could not understand what I wanted to do.

Inspiration

1. Voronoi cell diagrams

For this exercise I use Voronoi diagram that I used in Illustration 2 several times and in other courses because it is very appealing to me but also because of the ideas behind the used of the Voronoi theory.

This image represent the mathematical construction of the voronoi cell to how they are use in a particular project (García and Soler, 2017)

The image is the blue print for a building where “what is important is the organic development of the structure” (García and Soler, 2017)

The next two images are my own work for the patter exercise. I used the images here for you to see how the look. This grid was done based on my area map.

This is just an example to explain how a voronoi cel is done, here you can find the process that lead to the next picture. (Cabrera, 2020)

The second images are also an example of how a patter will look after adding colour. Each colour represents a layer, this is very important for this work.

This is a patter that I created fot the Assigment 5, it is used here just as an example of how it will look like, to see how it was create and the math behain you can look here (Cabrera, 2020)

2. Paper cut maps

Northern Michigan (Nelson, 2019)

I was not going to use high to create a map over the sea levels but the Voronoi cells diagram. What I was interested was in the used of the paper and the colour to create more impact.

The idea behind A is heat temperature to create the map. K was based on a topographic map. If you look closer, you could see the different among the two maps.

Making

The letter is 5 by 9 cm

This is the colour pallet that I chose for this letter. I think it might be interesting to do all of them buy I did the K

This is just how I did the letter. This need to be finished and cut the endings.

Re-do Exercise 4.3

When I did the comic, I was doing the first charter and I thought about building tension but as an alone piece the tutor was right it miss something so I went back and I tried to add some elements to create more tension and add a piece of the story that was going to be shown later on.

I used photoshop to add the monster. I think this exercise needed more work and perhaps change the colour pallet as the pages progress to get a darker atmosphere.

Research assignment 6: Disasters of war

This article is crucial to understand the effects of the war on Goya and how this correlate with the artwork he generates at that time.

Goya and violence

Goya was hunted by the devastation of the independence war but specifically the pointless of the war. The printing series “Disasters” and other work done at the same time, are key examples of the type of work he produced as a response of war.

Goya did not agree with any justification of the war or ideology to support it. He only showed the dark side of the war and its victims and victimizers (Matilla, 2008). To me, this is what made his work so powerful. He showed us a pain, the futility of war without the glamorization of heroes and glorious battles.

Matilla highlights that the main issue for Goya was portrait the raw consequences of war for innocence, with no mention of specific battlefield or heroes (he was asked to do so by the King). To me this is a clear indicative that his main interest was to show the cruelty of war, the devastation, the senseless acts of war and the forgotten victims of its.

Genesis of the series

Matilla suggest that Goya might not have seen every event that he documents in the series. I am not an expert on art history, but this is quite an assumption and I am not sure how this matter in other to understand topic of his work. You can listen to a person experience, read a description on a diary, or see an event and all of them are valid source of information that contribute to create an accurate picture of reality.

This point is also a bit futile because he was representing pain, suffering not a “glorious battle” with a particular winner to increase the morale of the people. He was tormented by war. I expect that he did took certain liberties but not enough to detract from the main topic.

The titles of the pieces can be very descriptive. Can give a moral qualificative (Matilla, 2008). This has a positive side and a negative one. The positive is the clarification of any doubts that you might have about the meaning but it reduces the effects it can have in people. There are several titles that are concatenated so print 4 have a title “mujeres dan valor” (the literal translation of this does not make sense so I will approximate) women give courage and the next one (print 5) is “y son fieras” and are wild beasts. Only by reading the title you can see that he thought that women are courageous and can defend themselves.

Exercise 3.2: Once Upon a Time part III

Black and white

I have a problem with the background. I did not know that the fat from the fingers were going to be so visible and blurring it in black and white make if pop up worse than before.

I think the image look better than I expected in black and white. I chose this one where the light was more prominent that the original transformation. I think it works better. Another problem that I have is the scanner, I am not sure why, but some points are blurry.

Crops

The crops help to focus on the action. I think is better and highlight what happens in the scene. (There is a problem with the scanner)

Re-do Exercise 2.3: Everyday Fashion

I realise that part of what was wrong with this exercise is that I do not love fashion, I do not dream of dresses or jackets, so I have not creative ideas that will make a dress my own.

So, I went back to the exercise and I did something different. I look a jewellery that is also fashion but that it is something that i love. Contemporary jewellery has always been my absolute favour thing.

I used as primary research for the jewellery the botanical drawings that I did for the botanical exercise and I added a couple of pictures of different mushrooms. I did rings (mostly rings) because I love them, I have two central pieces, The first is the red, big ring base on the texture of a mushroom, the second is less charming as a drawing but I think this is a better piece, I create a base ring with the chape of a traditional mushroom and create a whole so I can carve more mushrooms inside.

I think Enamel is the way to go to create these pieces (the red ones) white the other ones can be done with fabric.

The necklace needs a bit more work. I think the piercing can be a way to create the texture for the mushroom

In general: This is quite fun. I will love to see this as an object.

Research 2.2: Fashion Illustration (re-doing)

The tutor asked me to push a bit more my boundaries with this exercise and I feel uneasy with fashion illustration, but I love jewellery (contemporary) as a way to voice personality and ideas. The pictures at the top are my own pieces and research for a jewellery designing course that I did years ago.

My research is based on my personal taste on jewellery.

Wendy Ramshaw

I love her work. She is not only a great craftsman but also an incredible artist. I like the simplicity of the lines and the complexity of her work. It is so perfect and her attention for the details is incredible.

Victorian and Albert Museum and Ramshaw, W. (n.d.)

There are not many drawings of Ramshaw jewellery, mostly metal work like doors but the ones presented in the Victorian and Albert museum are quite simple like the one above. She makes a simple line and a from perspective.

She made a few annotations on metal and shapes but nor as much as you will think because her pieces are quite complicated so you will expect more details bur this is not the case.

She also does not add colour, perhaps because in this particular lot was everything metal.

Jacqueline Ryan

She is also one of my favourite. Her work is impeccable, the level of detail and love that she puts in every piece is indescribable. Their unique composition and her design skill are also unique, this can be called classic but also contemporary, it is like taking a classic look and turning into the most creative piece

Victorian and Albert Museum and Ryan, J . (2010)

The picture above is part of an exhibition of her work, she shows how are the sketches and her work, the models and the way she construct the pieces.

This is also not a very traditional way of sketching jewellery, does not have the materials, the colours or the measurement, which are really important if you want to manufacture this but she made everything so she has a more fluid process, even so her illustrations and drawing are easy connected with the final work.

Art and Emotion by Naar

On the Encyclopaedia of Philosophy

Why this article was important? Even though, this is a more theoretical than a practical approach to understand emotion and art, it gives you an overview of its complexity, help you to understand the intricacy of creating a piece of art to evoke to a particular emotion or even the question if you can control what type of emotions you can evoque with your piece.

The theories to me are interesting and all of them seen to be explain one aspect of the behaviour. I made a list of the most interesting ones for me (see below)

The second part is a debate of emotions are genuine when they are related with are. Most of the philosophers think they are not but they do not think they need to be real to affect us. I was a bit surprise how small the argument was. They used the theories to explain the emotions towards art, of course each theory explain it base on the main premises, but they miss something interesting, the identification, there was an article where they explain that country genre music makes people cry more often because it was very specific, so people identified, I think this happen with books a lot. But is this what happen with art?

Art and tragedy

This was also an interesting part and related with my essay. Philosophers argue that is a contradiction (they called paradox but later Naar admitted that can only by a contradiction if you are 100% hedonist). I know this is just anecdotical, but I used my own experience to sense if a theory might over or understated an aspect and that is what I feel. I think pain and sadness can be intellectual stimulating or interesting, can be positive or plain sad.

In general, I feel again that the focus detail might help the intellectual debate but cannot explain the general experience of pain and art.

My personal notes on about this article

The author started by the different theories.

1. Cognitive theory: Emotions are cognitive stages about things in the world. These things have an intentionality. Basically, if something is perceived as dangerous you can feel fear. This theory explains the emotion generated by art as a judgment or perception and depending the answer that you give on this issue you can have a different state.

2. Belief requirement: You need to have a certain believe to have an emotion like someone is death in other to feel grieve.

3.Phenomenological thesis: Emotions are felt, and they are felt in different intensities.

4. Valence thesis: “Emotions have a hedonic tone” (Naar, n.a) so emotions have a positive or negative tome.

Essay: Self assessment 6

Essay Emotion and art.

I was a bit lost on how to do this. I have a background in human science, and I wanted to explore how successful artist (at least to me) can get people to engage emotionally. The tutor mentions my lack of illustrators, this is true because I did focus on pieces that impacted me over the years and my lack of vision made me stop there.

I also felt timid. English is not my first language and I do normally feel uneasy to write.

I will be rewriting and adding some of my tutor’s suggestions. I am a bit afraid to change everything, but I will give in a different approach.

Blog entries

I did not know that I needed to add them to the blog. I have my handwritten notes so I will be adding them to blog and I have been reading so I might add some new bibliography notes.

Assignment 1 Re-working the final idea.

The tutor gave me advice in other to improve this work, I took the following two because I wanted to preserve the drawings of the city as much as possible because I like them a lot and I put a lot of effort on them.

“consider the foreground, mid-ground and background in your final image. What should we look at first? This is called the ‘visual hierarchy’ – so, as the designer, where are you leading us within the image? This will be with colour, tone, lighting, positioning of the elements and their scale. The first floating city part could be massive and cropped that then will lead us to the other parts.”

I eliminated the background because it did not work. I love the mountain to create the idea of floating cities but in other to experiment with the hierarchy I decided to eliminate it. I still like it and it make the cities more “realistic” but if you extract the background, they look more mysterious.

I also experiment with the landscape and portrait. The portrait works better for a book cover but as a general idea, I think landscape it is better.

“what’s happening in the sky in relation to the light source that is lighting the rocks?”

I also played with the light source in the background, when I draw the cities all of them where consistent with the light source, but the background was not, so I made it congruent this time and I think help to create the idea of floating.

The one piece which is more congruent with the spirit of the novel, I think it is the one above. It gives the impression that the cities are moving with the wind.

Assignment 5: Final thoughts

There is a lot of work that needs to be done before I am happy with my work. I love this work and I am quite happy but in the end, I always feel that I could have done better, that people finished their work different.

I am feeling insecure about my work every time and I know this is not good.

On the positive side: I think the final results are good and the visual of my work is dramatic (This is something I was looking for). I think the technique suited the subject and was effective in creating an atmosphere.

Perhaps I need to show my work to people who do not know me and get some feedback.

Assignment 5: Self-reflection

I improve my understanding of the visual language in this course and this term, but I do not think is enough. I think my narrative illustration is better now, but I still got room for improvement.

This is very new to me. I am at the very beginning of understanding the relationship with clients and more important the audiences. I am not clear where I stand concerning them.

I think I have improved the way I understand problems and I solve them, but I still have a long way to go to get a more unique and personal way to create illustrations.

Apply visual research and idea development has been my objective this term and I think I have made progress, but it also needs a lot of improvement.

Critical evaluation of my work and others is fine, perhaps I should be more positive when looking at any work.

Assignment 5: Secondary Research

I focus my research on surreal illustration, to create an interesting message for my chronic pain idea but also about the idea of destiny that was in the midst of my work so I look into different illustrators that have a surrealist vibe.

Roland Topor

His work is quite unique. About his technique. I love the hatching. it gives a sense of texture that makes the piece intense and obscure but obviously, his visual metaphors are the most interesting part of his work. I would like to investigate his technique in more detail for feather years.

Juan Osorno

I like the sci-fi topic; it is creative and interesting at the same time. His way of working with graphite is intriguing, make everything so unemotional, clinical even. I like the effect. I added him to my research because I found his work metaphorical and I was looking for that to create my work. I know this is not related to his illustration, but I love his objects. I did jewellery and I stopped when I got sick, I feel that can be a way to combine my illustration work with craft and create objects that complement my work or the other way around.

Pawel Kuczynsk

This is a bit controversial for me. I love some of his metaphors but some of them are cliches. The way he combines ideas is quite interesting. I am not certain but word association can be the way to go for him because some of these are the first two or three things you think when you read the text.

I also love the simplicity. Too many things can be distracting to the main meaning, I agree that can be richer if you add more information to a drawing but I am not so sure if adding more information not distract.
