Asteroids Elevator Pitch
I'm currently designing my second platform game, referencing the blueprint from the fifth week's tutorial, the Asteroids game.
To be honest, I haven't yet decided what kind of Asteroids game to design. As I mentioned before, I'm not very interested in 2D games, so I lack experience in this area. However, based on the requirements for this week's checkpoint, I will start by following the template provided in the tutorial for the game introduction.
Gameplay: The Asteroids game taught in this week's tutorial is a very classic 2D shooting game. Players control the movement of the player character by moving the mouse. On the map, asteroids of various sizes will randomly spawn. Players can destroy the asteroids by shooting bullets or dodge them through agile positioning.
Target Audience: I believe the audience for this game will span all age groups. I played a similar game on an arcade machine when I was young and found it incredibly fun. Therefore, I believe this game will be suitable for both young and old.
Why Will It Attract Attention? This game is a classic, requiring players to continuously maneuver their character to dodge or destroy asteroids. As time progresses, the speed of the asteroids increases. This linear increase in difficulty perfectly manages the player's emotions, aligning seamlessly with the challenge curve mentioned by Tracy Fullerton (Chapter 4, page 98). It first gives players a taste of victory, making them feel the game is easy, and then gradually increases the difficulty, stimulating the player's desire for challenge and maintaining their interest in continuing to play.
The Player's Role: I have modified the materials provided in the tutorial. Now, in my Asteroids game, players need to control a tank, which has to dodge or destroy the incoming rocks.
How to Motivate Players: I plan to add a score display and leaderboard feature in the game. because I once read a novel related to a game designer(This is a fictional novel, but the game is real. This novel is a Chinese novel and the source cannot be found, so it cannot be quoted.), which mentioned a game, Flip Bird, where players need to adjust the bird's altitude to dodge obstacles and aim to score as high as possible. To give players a sense of achievement, the designer in the novel decided to added a multiplayer leaderboard to stimulate players' competitive spirit. Returning to the point, as I mentioned, adding leaderboards and a scoring system will greatly increase players' interest in achieving high scores. Each time a player breaks a record or climbs up the leaderboard will be the biggest motivation.
What Type of Game Is It? This game will be a 2D action survival shooting game.
I am still brainstorming ideas beyond the Asteroids game template provided in the tutorial and might release a version 2.0 of the Asteroids elevator pitch in the future.
