There are a few crews that are moving the industry right now, but the one that has to catch your attention is the A$AP Mob. The collective is making big moves and has been doing it knowlingly to the public for nearly a couple of years. When Rocky emerged on the scene, there was somewhat of a shock factor, because nobody was expecting that kind of sound to come out of NYC. It was refreshing, new, captivating and just brilliant. It’s useless to say that I am a big fan of the Mob. Surely, A$AP Rocky caught the attention before his peers and he was able to put his team on the map. When his mixtape dropped, the excitement - for my part at least - was crazy, and we were all anxious to hear what the album would sound like. Even though some would say that “Fuckin problems” was him selling out, I beg to differ, it’s not traditionnal A$AP Rocky but then again what is? He reintroduced “chopped ans screwed” to the world. But that collab, although some expected it, was genius, and that is the reason why it moved so many units. His album is so well rounded. My opinion is a bit biased because I’m a huge fan, but I woudn’t believe anybody that would tell me that the album is shit. It may not be your cup of tea, but talent is talent and it’s undeniable in his case. We wouldn’t normally expect an artist of his caliber to come out with a crew that can absolutely back it up, but they do. Wether they are rapping or not, everybody is doing something big. One of the genius behind it all is A$AP Yams, who happens to be a founding member of the A$AP Mob and who is as well a musicologist, his knowledge on hiphop catches you off guard. I believe there is a real teamwork behind all of this, and this team work is what makes the Mob one of the most - if not the most - effective collective in the music industry. I believe that their success if based off their brotherhood. They understand that to each its time to shine and support one another.
Before Rocky’s album came out, “Lords Never Worry” which is the A$AP Mob mixtape came out, and to be totally honest, although it was rushed and all, I thought it was genius and full of (raw) talent. It’s amazing to be able to showcase the fact that everybody has something to bring to the table and that their flows are all different.
I woud like to start with Addie, who is a personal favorite of mine, he knows he has to work on his craft and that makes it that much appealing, there’s nothing like being able to witness an artist in the making. That’s why I say middle finger to the haters, because we don’t actually know what he could bring to the table. I see great potential in him.
Can I state how extatic I was to find out that Ferg got signed? He’s unique, lyrically amazing, his flow is dope, I’m so excited about him and I can’t wait for his mixtape to come out. I love his word play and it is all just so clever. I watched freestyles where he was just going ham, bodying the beats and I was like is this real? Can that many talent come from the same crew? All I have got to say is watch out for him, it doesn’t matter if you were aware before the madness or if you’re just jumping on the bandwagon, you can’t ignore a phenomenon of its magnitude.
Then we have A$AP Twelvy, the good goon. He brings back that raw NYC rap. And if you know anything about him, you just how loyal and how hungry he is. And that only tells me that’s he’s going to win, there’s nothing more powerful that wanting to make it forreal, and nothing like holding down your niggas. He doesn’t have much material out, but if you’re familiar with the Mob, you’ve heard him on a few songs and on freestyles. I personally love him, he seems to be quite a character and that’s based off of the rare interviews and his twitter. I believe his mixtape is coming out this fall (correct me if I’m wrong) and I can’t wait! We haven’t seen or heard that much of him but trust me when I say that he’s here to stay. He’s obviously one of my favorites but the material speaks for itself.
Now we’re onto A$AP Nast. He’s just going crazy in these streets. The freestyles showed me how good he was. I don’t know if he knows how talented he is and therefore keeps us out of the loop or if the timing isn’t right. I’m such a huge fan of him, he rhymes like not many do and his flow is so dope. I want to hear more, because I feel like he deserves to be heard. I want more material, more things to hold on to until it’s his time to come out.
Not every member of the Mob raps. Which brings me to A$AP Illz, he also happens to be one of the original members of the Mob, and he’s doing big things as well. He’s modeling, wether it’s for clothes or jewelry he’s out here forreal. He has his Stussy gig going on, and it’s amazing. He does many photoshoots. What I love about him is that he doesn’t speak much but the work is here to back it all up.
We also have A$AP Bari who is also involved in the Stussy thing. But moreso has its own clothing line coming out, VLONE, it just hit stores in LA. And I’m sure it’s available online. Like Illz, he’s very quiet about his craft but still delivers. He also has “very rare ‘Toast to the Gods’ shows” that A$AP Rocky recently showcased for example.
On top of that we have A$AP Ty-Beats who produced a couple well known beats of A$AP Rocky. He’s very talented and low key and has expended his talent beyond the Mob. I believe he’s a great beatmaker as well as a great asset to the team.
I can’t help but mention A$AP Relli and A$AP TY-Y. Relli has his own clothing line, or maybe should I say merch, called “Trap Gxd” and it’s doing really well, I love it. Ty-Y is a real life biker and rides dirt bikes like most of us can’t. He also has a sponsor and makes videos to showcase his talent. He raps as well.
There are a lot of members of the A$AP Mob, and that is just me stating what I am aware of. The A$AP Mob is an overall incredibly talented crew that makes much noise just by doing what they do, and they won me over. I’m very excited for what the future holds for them, and the world better be ready to receive more.
