Donny had been in that bed for what felt likes year now, and Kveta had been there the whole through all of it thus far. The nurses told him she slept by his bed when he wasn't conscious, and that she only strayed when she had too. Donovan always appreciated her loyalty, the depth of her care for him.
But he insisted she return home. He needed her to go give food and water to his marvelously tiny Peanut, the poor dog must have had no idea why he was alone for nearly a day and a half. Kveta needed to shower and get clean clothes, she needed to bring some things for herself (and to bring Peanut, too!). He assured he was alright, he was going to sleep, and at some point call his mama. C'mon honey, you know i'll be fine. do those things for me, please? i need you to. i cant take care of you or peanut so you have to do what i'm asking, and do it for me.
The call to his mama came twenty minutes past noon and wasn't as well worded — "Mama?" His strained voice broke, cracked into tears as soon as the word was out of his mouth. He couldn't even explain what had happened, just where he was, and that he needed her to come to him, and that Alek should come if he was home.
And now he was waiting, alone in a hospital room half asleep staring at the ceiling. He couldn't shake the exhaustion from his bones, and his shoulder hurt, head hurt terribly (the concrete had gashed his right temple when he fell, they said), but at the same time, he was so tired it almost wasn't terrible. He was worried about Kve taking care of him alone like this, when he couldn't take care of her. but Mama Astra could ease the burden on them both, she was always the kind of mother that healed all wounds — He remembered learning that the day she brought him from the street into her home.
The nurses were aware that when a woman (and possibly a young man) showed up looking for Donny, they were to be sent to the intensive private care area, and to tell them what had happened. Donny didn't want to tell her himself.
