“Hey Peter, are you okay?”
Peter snapped out of his daze as he refocused his gaze onto you. You smiled at him and he sheepishly smiled back after getting caught in the midst of daydreaming about you. Clearing his throat, he nodded and adjusted his position on the chair he was sitting in. You guys agreed to meet after school to work on your Spanish homework together since he was struggling, and you volunteered to help him since Spanish was your native language. Your professor reached out to both of you after class that day and decided to meet at the library. It was only to repay the favor of him showing you around Midtown Tech when you transferred from Spain to New York due to your mom’s work.
“¿Estás seguro de que estás bien?”
Peter melted on the inside once he heard you speak Spanish towards him and he nodded in response, his cheeks heating up as you gave him a warm smile.
“Perfect, shall we continue exchanging phrases together?”
He contemplated for a bit before shaking his head and pushing the Spanish textbook aside.
“I’m more curious about your culture, do you think I can ask you more questions about what was it like to live there?”
You smiled at him as you noticed the eager expression on his face and nodded. “Sure, we can do it. I believe a little break is deserved.”
Leaning against the back of your chair you stretched out your arms and got into a comfortable position. “So, what do you want to know, el maricon?”
“Do you always greet people you know by kissing them?”
You chuckled at his first question remembering how frazzled he was when you first did it to him. The way his cheeks flared up and how he stuttered around you was adorable. The more you did it whenever you greeted him, the more he grew accustomed to it and along with the nicknames you always through at him.
“Yes, it is a culture thing for us. I’m not sure how it came to be, but it’s been a custom that everyone does.”
“Huh, that’s interesting. So, I could do it back to you if I wanted to?”
You nodded and played with your pencil. “You can and I wouldn’t mind it. But if you did it to Ned, then that’d be a whole different story.”
Peter laughed and ran a hand through his hair. “Yeah, that’s fair. I’m also having trouble with something; do you think you can help me with it?”
Tilting your head to the side, you nodded your head. A buzz from your phone signaled that someone had texted you and you grabbed your phone to answer your mom. You gave him a sheepish smile and said, “Continue, I’m listening. It’s just my mom who texted me.”
He smiled at you and said, “How do you say, what’s your favorite coffee?”
“¿Cuál es tu café favorito?”
“Then how do you say, what would you do if I bought it for you?”
“¿Qué harías si te lo comprara?”
“Would you let me take you out to coffee, then?”
“¿Me dejarías llevarte a tomar un café?”
Your eyes snapped up when you processed what he was asking and he gave you a playful smile. Raising an eyebrow at him, you set your phone to your side.
“Are you asking me out on a date, Peter?”
He nodded as he smiled, and you laughed. “I’m assuming this whole tutoring thing was a whole gimmick to spend time with me then.”
Peter shook his head rapidly and said, “I actually needed help but might as well shoot my shot, y’know?”
You smiled shyly and bit the edge of your pencil. “Me encantaría ir en una cita con usted.”
Peter pouted at your response and said, “English, por favor.”
Laughing to yourself, you bit your lip and nodded as you scribbled down your number, passing the note to him. “I would love to go on a date with you.”
