Hey! I'm auditioning for a middle school all-state band and you can play whatever you want, so I was wondering if you thought I'd have a good chance of getting into the symphonic band if I played Finzi's Prelude from the Five Bagatelles? I have it down pretty well, and it's kind of a thing where everyone makes it, it's just really hard to get into symphonic. Thanks!
The most impressive thing musicians at the earlier stages can do is play musically. At some point, everyone well have the majority of the technical aspects like rhythm and notes. The thing that can make any musician stand out is there phrasing and the direction they give a musical line. The more exaggerated you make it, the clearer it will be to the audience or judges listening to you play.
