@astroferret I understand where you’re coming from it’s just the concept doesn’t appeal to me as a bird owner.

Like, I’d rather strengthen their feet and legs through climbing, perching and gripping and encouraging that behaviour with food rewards like foraging in a big chunk of wood or paper or cardboard etc. You don’t really see wild parrots running around the ground for long periods a day exercising. It just doesn’t feel like a natural momentum for a parrot.(not that having a wheel will encourage that)

For an older bird I’d have platforms, runways/ramps and various perches for climbing in a flight cage which offers a more lower dwelling being a horizontal shape.

I just don’t see the enrichment in a running bird, plus constant repetitive movement on their legs can’t be good for older joints arthritis .

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do this for your bird, by all means do what you think suits your bird and if you see no issue with it go ahead.

It’s just not something I’d personally choose for my birds because of the risks involved.

I spent $30 on a heated perch, and my birds won't even look at it. I touch it sometimes to see how warm it is and it's always a nice temperature , they're just not interested.

I wonder if maybe it’s a weird sensation to them? How often would they regularly come across a heated perch!  But then again my guys tend to sit on the computer for heat so maybe that’s not why.  Could just be a mixture of confusion or a little fear towards it or the perch just not being somewhere high and comfy? or just not cool enough to feel necessary to them/ messing with thermoregulation?  As I’ve said I’ve not used them so I’m just throwing ideas around!  Thank you for the input I really appreciate it!

It’s just a social preening behaviour usually, either that or thinking they’re seeds.  Generally birds will ‘preen’ blemishes on skin since they don’t recognize it as an actual part of our body.

Do canaries and finches play? How do they entertain themselves? I've never seen one do anything besides beep beep beep but I've never had any extended interaction with one :o

They don’t get as mentally engaged as parrots do with toys but things like really simple foraging (pulling treats out of a twine ball or putting them inside finger traps) and basic toys tend to do well.  Most will enjoy things they can make noise out of (avoid bells because it can make them aggressive) and bright colours, hitting beads together, and things that can be easily tugged and pulled for fun. They can also be tamed and trained but it’s usually quite difficult to do unless they were hand raised, still possible but takes a phenomenal amount of work. A lot of their time is spent singing and beeping about but they do need basic toys and simple problems to keep themselves mentally active.
