Proclus and Astrology in Platonism - The Astrology Podcast

An interview with Dr. José Manuel Redondo about philosopher Proclus, and how he integrated astrology and theurgy with Platonism.

some very interesting discussion in this episode, for those with an hour or three to spare. a few stand out quotes (emphasis mine):

"If I may add something briefly regarding Platonism that may help us to conceptualize or contextualize better—for these philosophers, the figure of Socrates is something akin to that of the Buddha. Socrates is seen as an incarnation of Apollo, and the successors of the school are seen as divine men and women, because there are also important women philosophers in this school; Plato himself is seen as a mystagogue and as a prophet, basically. So it is a notion about philosophy that is different from our common modern conception or misconception about it, and this has to be considered regarding Greek philosophy in general. There’s this Greek scholar, Christos Evangelious—who recently passed away—who basically says that we have to consider Greek philosophy as closer to the philosophy of India and China than to that of European modern philosophy. So that’s an important part of the context to consider when we approach these philosophers for whom mysticism and science can be seen as complementary and can be taken necessarily together." -Dr. José Manuel Redondo

"...I think it has to do with the reductive conception of astrology as something regarding only a technique to interpret charts. In a wider sense, it is a vision about the relationship between divinity, the cosmos, and the human being—that is shared by philosophers, scientists, mystics, doctors or medics—where it is conceived that there’s a dynamic, intimate relationship between the heavens and the Earth." -Dr. José Manuel Redondo

"...at least some astrologers were conceptualizing the cosmos itself as God and as a living entity, just in the same way that the Timaeus is outlying this conceptualization of the cosmos itself as being a god and being a living entity; so that in some way the Timaeus may have influenced later philosophical traditions, including the conceptualization of astrology that took that idea seriously, and I think that’s really important and interesting. As a matter of fact, we see other traces of that, for example, in the summary of the text of Antiochus of Athens—the astrologer from maybe the 1st or 2nd century. At one point, when he starts talking about the Thema Mundi—or the mythical birth chart for the cosmos—he actually refers to it as the ‘chart of God’; so astrologers may have explicitly also conceptualized the Thema Mundi itself as the birth chart of God and as this idealized birth chart in the same way that each individual human also has a birth chart." -Chris Brennan

Astrologically Speaking...

Whenever I see people talk about astrology, there’s always that part of me that just starts to twitch violently. I have nothing against astrology. In fact, I had a phase where I was super into it. I’m not as into it anymore but the whole residual astrology nerdiness still shines through. And it’s shining through whenever I see those astrology things like “Aries: Does X in Y situation” and so on full bore. 

The thing is that the astrology stuff that you’re all talking about is really just the Sun Sign. While it’s the more significant part of your personality (as it represents you individuality), there’s FAR more to it than just your Sun Sign. I mean there’s like other signs like planetary signs and whatnot, but I’m talking about the three big guns.

Rising Sign

Now we all know the Sun Sign. It represents your individuality and a good sum of one’s personality traits is usually what comes into play. For example, I’m a Pisces. I’m sensitive, creative, and intuitive. However, I’m also a bit of an escapist and can play the martyr. These are things that are true about me. However, that’s not all there is to me. Hell, some of the Piscean traits are very low key with me. Why? Because of the Moon and Rising Signs.

The Moon Sign is like your inner-self, the side that’s unconscoius and guides your emotions. You can figure out this by looking at what sign the Moon was on your birthday. However, if you’re on a transitional day between two signs, take heed and read between the two to see which one is more you (or invest in a Birth Chart). Now for example, I’m a Leo Moon. This means that I have a ridiculous amount of pride, am quite the entertainer when I’m comfortable in my surroundings, and 

And then the Rising Sign. This is the First Impressions kind of representation. Like what do people see upon first blush. Basically, it’s kind of just like how you show yourself. For example, I’m a Taurus Rising. This means that I initially come off as quite practical and serious with a taste for the finer things in life. All things are fairly true about me. To figure this one out, however, you need your exact time and location of birth.

So I guess my main beef is that it’s only describing the Sun Sign and people are more than just their Sun Sign. Hell, I haven’t even gotten into the Mercury Sign, Venus Sign, Mars Sign (especially since my Venus/Mars conjunct are both in Aries...considering I’m a Pisces, it makes an interesting combo) and Jupiter Sign (the other signs are more universalish) and those can bring up aspects of one’s personality too. And then I didn’t even go over the Birth Charts, the Aspects that signs can have together, the houses and what it means when a certain sign is the leader of that house...it’s just a lot more that goes into it. And yes, I know I’m a huge dork.

I have a lot of water and fire signs in my chart...I think it’s pretty obvious haha
