bubblegum as an ostensible damsel-in-distress who uses her power to turn other girls she considers dangerous into damsels i.e. flame princess; bubblegum taking advantage of her positionality as a damsel-in-distress to deceitfully manipulate others into believing she's incapable of wrongdoing vs flame princess fully rejecting the gendered label of "princess" as she pursues absolute honesty. I LOVE EARTH AND WATER
the unfortunate thing about the popularity of bubbline is that there isn't as much f/f crack in the at fandom as there should be. I can't believe bubblegum × betty isn't really a thing that shit would go hard
did mr creampuff haunt the narrative
adventure time season 3 is so crazy because in some ways it's the greatest season just in terms of how quickly the show is able to mature and pin down a unique but consistent tone and on the other hand it's still waaaaay early like they're not even overtly alluding to sexual violence yet
I wish more of these bumpers were preserved somewhere accessible because whenever I rewatch adventure time I can't help but remember them, they're so inextricable from my experience watching adventure time (and cn in general) as a kid. does anyone remember the ones where they would put scooby doo dialogue over scenes from adventure time lol
"am I a joke, your knight, or your brother" makes me CRAZY crazy because even though the line singles out each person finn is singing to and their supposed perception of him (marceline, bubblegum, and jake respectively) the line can simultaneously be read as being entirely directed at bubblegum, the person who brought finn here (or rather, his attachment to her brought him here) and the person whose perception of finn eludes him the most. obviously he's her knight, but he can't figure out if her affection for him is romantic (as being the knight to the damsel in distress would imply), platonic ("your brother") or entirely superficial ("a joke"). the song is constantly ping-ponging between addressing bubblegum as an individual ("I'll forget that I lost a piece of your hair") and addressing the group with her included ("you are my best friends in the world"), exemplified by the very first words of the song being "everyone, bubblegum" drawing an intentional division; the "what am I to you" chorus addresses bubblegum as an individual and a member of the group simultaneously, indicating that finn is using his song not only to express to his friends how much he cares for them, but also to express his frustration regarding his inability to gauge how bubblegum perceives him and what the nature of their relationship is. which directly parallels marceline's frustration in her own song!
of course, marceline gets her resolution once the door opens; she realizes that she's always been in bubblegum's heart, despite her outward standoffishness. finn, meanwhile, receives no such closure; he retrieves his piece of bubblegum's hair and bubblegum merely gives him a dismissive "oh, you" with a smile, refusing to outwardly reject his obvious feelings for her but also making it clear that she still sees these feelings as a cute little innocent crush, not as something that's actively causing him emotional pain. she still can't empathize properly with finn at this point in the series, so the two of them have no way to meaningfully understand each other. this episode makes me SICK
