Atang
I was sitting on the dusty attic floor when my mother called out from the stairs. "What are you doing there?" she asked.
My forehead sweats as I rummage through old dusty boxes with only the incandescent bulb illuminating the room. I was looking for an old polaroid photo of me and grandparents during my preschool graduation. It used to be displayed on my grand mother's living room wall above the antique Narra rocking chair from the old house. I was hoping it was kept here along with the other framed family portraits when she moved in with us.
I didn't have a clear memory of the day when that photo was taken but I vaguely remember my grand father telling me to wait for a minute before shaking the printout because it could actually damage the film. It's weird, isn't? To remember something so mundane. The next thing I can recall was the funeral when he passed away October of the same year.
There was an Otto shoebox filled with dogeared family pictures, some in sepia, others from Christmas celebrations few years ago.
My mother called out again, "Wrap it up and help your Lola with the Arroz Valenciana,"
It was Lolo's favorite, she told us before that's why we always have it in almost every family occasion.
On my way out, my foot accidentally hit a stack of unsorted papers and books. A familiar black leather frame fell from the pile and in that moment, I knew. I picked it up and took it downstairs.
There is an Ilocano tradition called 'atang' which means food offering for the dead. In other regions the ritual is practiced to ward off evil spirits. In our family, food is placed on the altar beside the picture of the departed family member, to remember.
We always remember, especially today.
