Fantasy-booking Summer Rae vs AJ Lee feud.

ateacupinastorm asked me this for my little video thingy and I figured I'd have to make a proper text post about it, because it would just be too long to cover in a 5 minute video. I'm not the best fantasy-booker, but seeing as how these two are favourites and both only beginning their careers, I'm hopeful they will one day clash.

In my mind, this feud would almost have to be a little bit meta in terms of what a Diva is, or what a Diva could be. AJ would have to be a babyface for this, as then she could be defined by her tremendous determination, dedication and passion for the craft of wrestling. This characterisation of her can draw from actual real facts about her life, sleeping in cars, queing for Wrestlemania tickets and crying when she met Lita. This is her life's passion, and she's living it. She represents every little girl who wants to make a career inside the ring; she represents every girl in the audience as a wrestling fan.

Summer, the heel, in contrast represents the Diva that hasn't overcome the odds because in the public imagination, she's the type of girl who's had it easy (this is not to say Danielle, the actual woman playing Summer, hasn't worked hard to get to where she is - I'm talking character here). Gifted with model-tall genes, natural athletic ability and gorgeous looks, she represents the Diva who's not just about the wrestling, but the glamour surrounding it all, too. She's doing movies and TV and guest appearances, she's dancing at every show and performing, and when she's in the ring, she's using underhanded tactics and heel psychology to gain wins. Even when we know all roster members are wrestlers as much as they are entertainers, Summer represents the Entertainer here.

So in terms of the promos, AJ could cut the babyface promos that draw from this real characterisation of her as the passionate Diva and wrestler, and about Summer Rae as the girl who's had it easy, waltzing into the company and just being handed this that and the other, and especially as the girl who can't win against AJ if not by cheating. Summer can play the "You're just jealous, you wish you were me" card, and AJ can counter by showing her overness with the crowds. She can even reference her heel days, needing protection and cheating.

Maybe this feud would draw from things that are so commonplace in wrestling feuds it'd feel a little too safe, but it's how I would ideally see these characters, especially in these particular roles. I think Summer may one day become a good babyface, but for now, she's perfecting the heel role, and AJ, on the other hand, as people have discussed forever, could use a babyface turn, to allow her many, many fans to legitimately cheer for her. If such a turn woud happen in 2014, I could see a feud with Summer as a viable option.

I did know, yeah, I saw the talk that she and MF and GRRM did in Australia recently. My thoughts, well like I’ve said before I thought Lena would’ve made a pretty good Cat, when everyone was brainstorming casting suggestions ahead of S1 Lena’s name came up a fair few times but more for Cat, actually I never saw her name come up for Cersei but it could have, I can’t read everything obviously. But yeah I think you can find on the inital winter-is-coming-.net announcement page that it was a surprise she was up for Cersei instead of Cat. At that time she was on Sarah Connor Chronicles, she’d also done a few other roles like Gorgo and Guinevere and stuff that were kinda reminiscent of Catelyn in a typecasting way. There are things that she does that I would’ve appreciated in the role, she’s more subtle and I think that’s something I missed in how Catelyn ended up appearing in the HBO show, to me she came off instead like a bit theatrical and stagey and I really couldn’t get over that, it just distracted me. While Cat has her dramatic moments there are many more times where she has a more internalized and perhaps repressed vibe, she doesn’t really plop her emotions down in front of you in one big display, she just kinda exudes in the background like a radiator. That was my impression anyway, her internal monologue is very … pondery and musing, it’s a really pervasive flavor in her chapters, to me anyway. But I also wonder if Lena is the kind of actress who wouldn’t really go for the big emotions when it’s time to do that, she has a kind of ironic sensibility it seems to me, at least sometimes. I bet she’d at least do okay though. So yeah I think she would’ve been pretty good, but I can see from her POV where she might not want to get typecast and perhaps Cat was a little too similar to the nobly beleaguered society woman/mother she’d done before. Also she’s a really sarcastic person and I wouldn’t be surprised if she just would rather play Cersei, which is a generally funner and funnier role than Catelyn. Also I guess with Lena, her voice is really soft, and that gives her performance as Cersei a kind of irony, but with Cat, I always imagined someone with the authority of, like, Kristen Scott Thomas in one of her typecasted stiff British blueblood roles. Also, with the kind of writing that D&D gave Catelyn, I mean, it’s not like they really got the character so who knows if the character Lena read on the script would come across to her as the same character that I read in the books. That kinda limits my imagination’s ability to, er, imagine. But I bet she would’ve been pretty good, generally I don’t think of anyone in ASOIAF as “omg only ONE person could EVER have played this role well one person and one alone”. There are a few roles where only one particularly famous actor even comes to mind, sure, like Charles Dance’s Tywin, but they’re pretty few, and even then I wouldn’t say that it’s impossible someone else could’ve done a good job. I’m not really enamoured of the production, even the better parts like the cast, to that extent, lol (though I think Nina Gold did a largely great job on her various logistical constraints).
