haku’s used to people making assumptions about his person due to his appearance, but he’s never had such an assumption lead to such a, well, informative conversation.

after listening to kiba mumble & stutter uncharacteristically through what he had to say, haku nods, letting the words sink in a moment; kiba came to him for help, guidance, & he doesn’t want to disappoint. especially not with something so important. however, he also doesn’t want to encourage kiba’s current nigh-panicky mindset & inner emotional storm, because, in the long run, what kiba’s ‘confessed’ to needn’t be a big deal or even a large part of his identity, even though it may feel that way right now. so while he’s certainly here to comfort & provide guidance to kiba in his hour of need, he is also careful not to feed the idea that this has to be an earth-shattering change. regardless of what anyone else thinks, kiba is still kiba. period. a fact haku hopes to convey by maintaining an easy demeanor & softening kiba’s stiff posture with humour.

he can taste blood in his mouth, but haku knows inside he is empty. devoid of fight, let alone the ability to start one in the first place — the chakra seals on his wrists, the handcuff around his left ankle, & raikiri’s vicious wreckage of his left pectoral muscle, sternum, & shoulder see to that. whatever’s in his IV drip doubles as a sedative, a suppressant that makes it difficult to orient himself in this strange white room with its bitter antiseptic tang, too weak to wrap stiff fingers around the sporadic flares of anger strong enough to burn through the numbing black fog that’s settled over his brain before they slip through his fingers before they can blossom into pyres. he’s too tired to be angry. mostly he just wants to sleep, perchance, to die.

still, despite the sedatives oozing into his veins, half-hooded brown eyes remain intelligent as they shift sluggishly from the ceiling to settle upon the visage of the cloaked figure standing before him, a figure so burned & disfigured his scars are all the introduction he needs: this is morino ibiki, the head of konoha’s torture & interrogation unit, a man of many names & feats, all of which could draw a shudder from even the most abhorrent nukenin. a man zabuza has once referred to as ‘The Flayed Man’ with such an intensity in his eyes that it bordered on irritated, awed reverence.

‘ morino-san, ‘ haku croaks impassively, expression as serene & detached as the moonlight glancing off a senbon, as if he cannot taste blood & bile building in the back of his throat from the man’s reputation alone, as if he is not contemplating biting through his own tongue just to spit it in this man’s face & choke before they can wrest a single word from his lips: ‘ to what do i owe the pleasure of this visit ? ‘
