armin looks at her quietly, his learned guilt mounting at the worry in her eyes. her constant kindness to him sometimes feels weighted in his throat. he doesn’t want her to feel like she needs to be there for him when he’s never given anything proper back to her.

he fakes a smile and sends it her way. the happiness might not be the most genuine, but the care in his expression is.

“ i don’t need to cry anymore. i don’t have the time to waste on it. and besides, i’ll be alright. ” the false reassurances slide off his tongue more naturally than any truth could, “ but ... thank you. ”

Armin flushes at the gesture, his cheeks warming and an almost nervous smile breaches his features as he sits up at the table. Their table, not that of his own family’s, of course. Legs swinging freely in the airspace between the chair and the floor, he looks to Carla and can only offer her an incredibly sincere “Thank you Mrs Yaeger.” before he shoves a spoonful of the pie into his mouth.

 He can still feel the ache within his head, rope burns that tear into the flesh. Every thought is colliding with one another, memories that lap && entwine it makes his stomach feel sour. Peace, it’s a conversation many speak of with the newfound Queen, the rightful heiress to the throne && walls. “Sorry, I’m tired” the little white lies that slip so effortlessly, when did they begin? He isn’t sure anymore, it feels like a stranger talks through his tongue. There’s so much I want to say, but where do I begin? It runs throughout his mind colliding with the truth. Burdens of the father, stains that never wash off his hands, the sunlight feels like it might burn his skin - it’s too pure. He visits often, whenever there is time sometimes it is weeks in between or maybe a few days. It’s been months, but he never wants to scare her && always smiles, but this time it is barely that of a thin line. 

  Tea that is untouched, brows that are furrowed as the pit in his throat swallows tightly. “Mom…?” it’s soft, barely above a whisper all the answers are there but he keeps searching for the truth, one that is different from the reality set forth. Eren’s stomach twists, bouncing up && down. There are moments he can see them all, the quietness in Shiganshina where afternoons were spent preparing for the next day. “I’m sorry I couldn’t come sooner” the tongue between his teeth is held tight, the question that lingers feels too hot if spoken it might scald the flesh. Calloused hands reach through his own locks, ruffling them in frustration as his voice is timid.
