Saturday Spotlight:
For the Summer Solstice we present a few specific features from Snow-White and the Seven Dwarves: A Tale from the Brothers Grimm, translated by American poet, novelist, and children’s author Randall Jarrell, with pictures by award-winning Wisconsin illustrator Nancy Ekholm Burkert.
I came across this lovely edition while doing cataloging verification and fell head over heels for the delightful historiated initial and colorful end-papers. When I took off the dust jacket, I discovered a black cloth cover with a very handsome embossed image of a raven, dove, and iris! We’ll feature Burkert’s illustrations for this book in a future post, but you can learn more about this artist’s amazing work here.
Our copy is from the book’s second printing in 1973 and was published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. The typography was done by Atha Tehon, it was printed by Pearl Pressman Liberty, and bound by A. Horowitz and Son. The book was a New York Times Notable Book in 1972 when it was first published, as well as a Caldecott Honor Book in 1973.
